Fallen Kell, hey, nice job of describing the difference between a short and long pipeline. Though I had considered how this might work before I never caught on to the fact that the key to the efficiency of shorter (more) pipelines is that the fast ones aren't held back by a slower one in front since they are not sequentially linked as in the longer (fewer) pipeline structure. Always tradeoffs.

The manufacturing cost of the Prescott is less and it will allow Intel to reach 4ghz by the end of the year -- that's what I read in today's WSJ....

The Prescott is cheaper to make alright but it's power consumption is horrible. A 4ghz Prescott will use 130 Watts at least! Look at this wattage comparision of Northwood and Prescott.
CPU Speed 130nm PIV 90nm PIV
2800MHz 69.7 89.0
3200MHz 82.0 103.0
3400MHz 89.0 103.0

No wonder Intel has changed standards for P4 Mobos and power supplys...these chips will make the old t-birds seem cool!

So I guess it's not worthwhile to wait for Prescott after I read the review. I will be better off with P42.8C. New egg is selling it for $190, I thought the price was supposed to be $178 ??

There is really no point.
But it's about time they lower the prices.

What kind of geek are you

Jk, actually I agree that for most people 2.4ghz is fast enough for almost anything right now.

haha...all you guys complaining about your computers...I'm still running on a P2 366MHz as my main computer. hehe...I can't even come close to running games (that's come out in last 5 years) and I'm even having trouble playing MPEG-4 video files (have to shrink size down to 50% zoom and strip off all extra stuff and run it bare on X (not using anything like gnome or KDE) to play stuff smoothly.

wow, you're a harda$$ now, aren't you? Let me guess, you have to format to free up enough space for the mpeg 4 video too?

Believe that was 640K, though my aging memory may be recalling incorrectly.

Hey, glad I'm not the only one. My celery 366 still runs CS, Q2, Q3 rock solid. Marriage and kids sure put a damper on souping up PCs and playing games...

He never said that, he said 640kb of ram, not 64kb.

I agreed but have yet to get married not to mention having kids. I'm still running on my 1.6Ghz from 2 years ago and Gayforce4 card life is good. As for jarodomega, why don't you stop being a cheapa$$ and get yourself a fvckin P3 machine for $100 from the FS/FT forum.

I remember reading an article way back when 600Mhz cpus were released and it tried to explain where no one would need over a 300Mhz cpu. times change bud.

So what? My wife is quite happy with 4-yr old IBM laptop (400MHz Celery). There are lots of people out there who don't believe in upgrades anymore... Most people, actually. I think that's the reason Intel stock is not $70 anymore

I was going to get a Prescott in the hopes it'd be an overclocking monster, but it sounds like it'd have to hit 3.6ghz to be really much faster than my Northy running at 2.8ghz. That would be fine if it was a nearly guaranteed overclock. Sounds more like I'd be lucky to hit 3.1 ghz on a 3.0.

unRARing actually depends heavily on how quickly your drive can go too...optimally you want to unrar from one physical drive to another, and both should be very fast drives.

But yes, if you have fast drives it should be faster to unRAR on a 6ghz P5 versus a 200Mhz Pentium MMX.
