p4 questions, can you help?

Hullo everyone,

Can anyone help me about this...I just bought:

p4 1.8a Northwood
256 TwinMOS 2100 CL2.5
MSI 845Ultra-ARU

1) Everything went fine (installation etc), just there's one thing that annoys the hell outta me - I dont know why, but when I reset the machine (whichever way), instead of rebooting, monitor goes into suspend mode (turns off) and machine doesn't react to anything any more - I have to turn it off, and then turn it on again...

Any ideas whats this? (Tried to consult the handbook, but didnt find much)

2) BIOS Temp readings say that CPU temp is inbetween 39-42 C, as I still have to install new WinXP on this, I didnt check with MotherboardMonitor, and fan and heatsink are intel retail, is that high temp or what? (Have to see the temp under full workload as well)

try turning off all of the power saving features, even in the bios.. Worth a shot..

Have you flashed to the latest BIOS? I assume nothing is oc'd yet, right? This could cause your syptoms as well. I used to run a 6BA+IV Soyo and a shutdown, restart (basically a reset) within windows would produce the same thing. I was overclocking. It annoyed the hell out of me. It turned out to be my video card (didn't like 89mhz bus), I was running a GF1 and as soon as I threw the GF2 in the problem was gone. GF3 worked fine as well.

Check you AGP bus speed and make sure you have the dividers set right.

Anyway, its not Power saving...Yesterday I overclocked it a bit (125 FSB), and to my suprise, after I did that, it started resetting normally...I didnt have time to investigate this reset thing a bit further, coz I was more 'under pressure' to reinstall all thing my wife needs (*groan*) + run Prime and 3dMark etc to see how stable it is...The system was running Prime95 for the whole night w/o glitch, also no probs running 3dMark2001SE a few times...

So system is stable, and wants to reset. I will try to figure what was wrong tonight - I have raised voltage (VCore to 1.65, Ram to 2.6), didnt touch the AGP tho...

Will post the results/conclusion (if any) here, mebbe sumone finds it useful...

I am still 'wandering' cause I have seen some other people (on MSI forums) with the same problem, but no solution yet...

I got ALL kinds of advices (And I mean all), so its kinda hard to track down whats wrong...

But, the most logical one seems to be that memory (or memslot) got oxided, so it cannot initialize upon cold start (turning the power on), and/or restart if not properly initailized...

If anyone knows anything bout chip oxidation and how to fix it, I would be grateful to share the knowledge with me...ANd if anyone had any experience with Oxidation before - I rember like 10 years ago I had Commodore Amiga (Actually still have it in the basement), which wasnt in use for like 2 years, and when I tried to turn it on, it simply didnt work - I opened it, pressed all the chips with my hand, closed it, and it worked like a charm - I remeber back then friends told me thats cause of 'oxidation'. But oxidation should happen only if something wasnt in use for some longer period of time...

ANyway, to cut the cr*p, any ideas still welcome..

I have the same combo as you (except I'm using Samsung 2700 DDR) and am running at 139mhz fsb. Fastest memory settings (cl 2, etc). So far I love this board, stable as a rock, no reboot problems. But I have heard that other 845 owners have had reboot problems. Try the msi forum also for some help. Also try increasing the DDR voltage.

Not sure if this pertains to your situation, but I had a P3 800 cpu quite a while back, that did the exact same thing, and after battling with it for quite awhile, ie; bios updates/ drivers for the board, etc... I discussed it with Compuwiz1, who at the time was selling alot of cpu's, and hence had a grip on processor testing and troubleshooting, and he relayed that once in awhile he ran into a cpu that had a different "frequency" than the others, and would not run correctly on 1 board/ but would on a different board. So, I changed out my board, which at that time was a be6-2, to an asus p3b-f/ and had no more probs.Like I said/ this may not be the case with your cpu, but then again it may be.

I have fixed the problem, tho donno what is causing that (Faulty mobo??)

Anyway, yesterday I moved the dimm from Dimm slot 1 to Dimm slot 2, and everything works like a charm now...(fsb 133, super stable, could go higher...)

I should try to get 2nd Dimm, and see how it works with other memory/2 dimms...
