P4 Retail Fan, how loud is it?

Recently I bought an Thermalright AX-478 for my Pentium 4 1.6aghz and then mounted a Vantec Tornado on it. Big mistake, I could hear that outside my house and down the street (okay so I'm exaggerating a little). Anyway, I just slapped on the retail HSF and used it to overclock, it worked fine and I think the only reason it won't go higher than 2.24 is because of my chip. That's beside the point though; I'm looking for a new fan and I'm wondering how loud the P4 fan is. Also, how good those variable SmartFans work with heatsinks, because I think they're built for cases. I found one that I really like, but I don't like the fact that you can't control the RPMs on it. The ThermalTake SmartFan Variable Control fan runs 2900RPM at low temps and delivers 46CFM worth of suctionage (?) at 39dB. That's pretty amazing considering other fans would do that at 45+ dB. What do you think? Anything lower than a Tornado's 52dB would be better I guess. And anything not much higher than the ?dB of a P4 retail fan.

I cant tell you the dB rating for my P4 retail fan, as I dont have an SPL meter, but I can tell you that the fan is not noticeable to me. It surprises me how good at cooling and how quiet it is.

I am actually using that combo. I have the AX-478 and the Thermaltake SmartFan II. I taped the thermal diode to the bottom of the AX-478, next to where the core will set (making sure it or the tape wouldn't get between the heatsink and the heatspreader). I also made sure that air couldn't affect it (covered with duct tape). It works pretty dang well. I never tried the retail heatsink on this mobo, so I can't compare temps, but the fan varies from 1700-3300rpm (idle to full load). I only start to hear it above my Antec 80mm fans and my Panaflo H1A 120mm at full load. And you have the option of pluggin in the rheostat and dialing it up to 4800 rpms if you really want a few more degrees less. (Didn't make any difference to how far I could overclock though, so I let it be quiet.) I am running a 1.8A at 2.61 (145fsb) at 1.7vcore (averages 1.6v at full load).
