my 2 HDD temps don't move, they stay right at 36C But the other 3 are all over the chart. I have 4 fans in my system, 2 in the back, one on the side and one on the top. The temps are start low, like 30C, then jump to 50C, then between 70-80C, then drop back to 30's. This is when my system is idel as well.

What cpu/mobo are you running ...what version of speedfan??? After installing speedfan does it find the sensors like a popup for finding hardware would??

Those wild swings shouldn't happen

I'm running a P4 2.53 with a gigabyte GA-8SG667 mobo. When it starts it finds things in the readings box. Then the program starts.

OK, I downloaded ThrottleWatch and had it running while I ran a stress test that came with the "Intel Desktop Control Center". I ran it for 5 minutes with the CPU pegged at a 100%. Here are my max temps.

Processor Zone 68C
System Zone1 50C
System Zone2 60C

ThrottleWatch did not show any throttling.

Any other tests I should try? Are these results OK?

Thank you to everyone that's replied. The information has been very helpful.

Yeah, fire up a 2-hour session of HalfLife2 and get your GPU heated up too. That can be another ~60-80W of heat right below your CPU, assuming you have a decent gaming card in there.

Yeah...run it longer then 5 minutes....

You need to get prime95 and run it while you run superpi 32mb version...let that ruin for 30 minutes and then lookl at temps...

68c after 5 minutes and not prime and who knows if it is stressing the HT...100% cpu load??? Where are you seeing that??? I am sure you are in the 70's...You need to run it lonegr then 5 minutes...You can run same stress tester and let it run for 30minutes to an hour then look at temp....prime95 and s&m will be about 5-8c higher then that I am sure....

I'm running SuperPi and Prime95 now. Running SuperPi by it self seems to be OK, but with Prime95 also running, I get this message.

"Not convergent in SQR05"

What's that mean?

UPDATE: Take that back. I restarted SuperPi and it's running now. I'll let it run for an hour and let you know the temp results.

OK...I ran both Prime95 and SuperPi 32M at the same time. SuperPi finished in 45 minutes. These are the max temp I saw during that time.

Processor Zone 72C
System Zone1 53C
System Zone2 62C

Are those acceptable temps? Sorry for being so naive on this, but it's the first PC I've built. It's not a gaming machine, so I don't think I'm going to have long periods of sustained CPU usage. It's for my wife to do Photoshop editing.

D@mn, those temps are HOT. I live in Hawaii and it is pretty warm most of the year but I never get over 50C during gaming or digital editing. At idle my CPU temp is 45-47 C.

Did you have throttlewatch going while you were running super PI and prime95? My 3.4 was getting up to 72-73c and was throttling at those temps. If it's not throttling, then I wouldn't worry.

No throttling according to ThrottleWatch.

I'm planning on calling Intel tomorrow to see what they say.

Stock cooling is more than adequate.

Your readings must be faithful. Many mobo sensors are horribly off. They're relative but with no reference.

If your cpu is really running too hot, you probably have recirculation in your case. No matter what fan/hsf you use, you will have this problem if this is the case! You cannot expect to lose heat with recirculation.

cough...cough...BS!!!

No cpu will idle at 45-47 and not load less then 3c....Obviously you dont know what load is....Even water would have a bigger swing then this....

Like I said the numbers are USELESS without ACCURACY! The readings most motherboards are giving are RUBBISH!

Wrong, those are the FAN INLET temperatures, not CPU core temperatures.

If you want to cool your P4 about 15C lower, buy a thermalright XP-120 or XP-90, just got one, and its awsome, cant beleive the difference, finally something to tame the P$ beast!!!
