P4 Running Hot

Just built my first PC last night. Turned it on this morning and the Bios is showing the CPU stabalized at 64-65 degrees C. I know the P4's running a little hot, but that seems extreme. Here's the specs I have:

Intel P4-550 3.4 GHz
Intel 925XCV Mobo
Antec Sonata Case

Using the included heat sink/fan that came with the CPU. I thought I messed up the thermal pad, so I went out and bought ArcticSilver paste. Cleaned everything up and reinstalled the heatsink. Same temps. House temp is 68F and the case is sitting in the middle of the room. No obstructions...which isn't where it will ultimately be. This concerns me. Do you think I have a bum CPU? (PLEASE no Intel jokes).

So that's the idle temperature, right? Fire up a CPU-intensive task and see where it peaks.

please list your case cooling for us...

INtel expects a lot out of its user in the area of case cooling..the reason they were trying to come up with the BTX form factor to fix their thermal mistakes...

I haven't stress tested yet, as I'm still installing everything. I just finished installing the utilities that came with the MOBO. Now the temps are:

Processor Zone 51C
System Zone1 41C
System Zone2 43C

I'll try to max out shortly.

UPDATE:
I'm installing updates to my VirusScan...now reading:
Processor Zone 66C
System Zone1 48C
System Zone2 55C

Yeah, if the Sonata's 120mm rear fan is running off the "Fan-Only" line from the PSU, plug it into a full-power plug instead, so it runs at full speed.
No obstructions...which isn't where it will ultimately be
I hope that doesn't mean you're planning to imprision it inside a cupboard in a computer desk or something :Q

51c is better...more in line...YOu will still likely hit mid 60's at least....Maybe near 70c if you use the stock hsf....

Go get a program called Throttlewatch and run it as you do some task and make sure you are not throttling due to heat once you start loading it and temps start climbing...

I was unable to keep my 3.4ghz prescott under 70c on any aircooling, it was throttling constantly under load, only way I could keep the temp under 60c was liquid cooling. My 2.8 and 3.2 prescotts did not have this issue.

I had the 120mm fan hooked up to to constant power. Changed the temp a couple of degrees, but that was about it. Put it back to fan only since it defeated the purpose of having the nice quiet Sonata case.

I was expected to put the machine into the computer desk we've been using for the past 5 years with our old Dell. Evidently, given the heat issues...that may have to be re-evaluated.

So, do you think my CPU and MOBO are running correctly and I just need to look into additional cooling techniques? Additional fans?

Try the Throttlewatch thingie that Duvie mentioned. If it doesn't hit the throttling point, I wouldn't worry about the CPU temperature too much, not at stock clockspeeds.

My OCed 3.0ghz with stock cooling constantly hit the alarm at around 65 - 70 C and applying real thermal paste didn't help either. The only solution for me was to get a CNPS7000Cu

If you're worried about the heat, just get a new hsf.

How about a full load app running a few hours...prime?? S&M??...

The reason I ask is no prescott with a stock hsf will have an idle to load temp of anything less then near 20c swing...I would say a true load for you with an app that can stress the HT (games cannot that is why that is not very indicative of a true load temp) would be in the ballpark of 68-71c

Like I said come summer we are going to be bombarded with prescot and heat threads...

I just opened my window in my room and let all the cold air rush in. . the PROC went from 52c TO:

CPU: 43c
SYS 31
PWM1 36
PWM2 36

according to my Abit 3-rd eye temp watcher...

Also room temp went from 34c to 26c.

I LOVE this Uguru Clock. . Every Mobo should have this.

UPDATE------

after 4mins. .

CPU: 39c
SYS 29c
PWM1 32c
PWM2 33c

Room Temp: 24c

Thats what i call cheap cooling solution
I THINK i'll close the window now..

Yeah I did that 2 night s ago and my LOAD temp while running FH nonstop for the last 6 days was a whopping 40c...

Not a standard I would go buy....

34c is actually a bit warm for a rooom....34x1.8=61.2 + 32 = 93f... Are you sure??? even 26c is 79f.....For a room to heat to 93f it would have to be quite warm outside and a lot of heat being generated in the room..I couldn't imagine you have the heat going...

My room stays closer to 68-71f for daytime highs...

Abits are known to read higher temps...however I say let it get back up to where it was and run 2 instances of prime then come tell us the load temp!!!

Idle temps are useless benchmarks.
Best drivers. XG 6677b, great drivers!!

,
Temps under loads..(games, applications)
75-80 DEGREES, Good temps.

That is so true, if the system runs good, you wont run into any trouble with games.

I use speedfan....It correlates well with everest home edition and sandras readings...msi corecenter reads a bit higher(+3c) and it seems to jump a lot up and down (like 4c swings in a second)...LOL...MSI own stupid app is widely known to be unstable and incorrect. What a bunch of numbskulls!!!

I'm trying speedfan right now. The temps are jumping around pretty bad. Also, what is temp1, temp2, temp3? I'm assuming one is CPU, one is case and not sure about the 3rd one. But which are which? And like I said, the temps are jumping around pretty bad, anywhere from 20C rto 70C on the first 2 temps. Temp3 is up in the 100's.

EDIT:
Temp 3 is the the -100's. Sorry

I run an AMD64 and my speedfan doesn't jump around at all....

For me...

test 1 is system temp
test 2 is cpu temp
test 3 is like an aux temp but I believe it is the sensor from my power supply plugged into one of the board headers...

I like it cause it also list my 3 HDDs and their temps...
