P4c performance is TERRIBLE

I really have no idea what to do. I've spent nearly $1000 on the new p4c 3.0ghz chip, the ASUS P4C800 mobo, and a gig of dual channel ddr400 RAM. My FPS in Raven Shield and Battlefield 1942 are TERRIBLE (I have a Gainward ti4600 video card). My buddy with a 2ghz athlon is kicking my butt in calculations on grid.org - I'm SO frutrated. I just ran this benchmark and got these disgusting results:

Yea, that really sucks. I have a 2.53 on a IC7 with two sticks of 256MB RAM that don't really match and I get twice the score your getting. And I'm using a 533 cpu. Hummm, can't really say what to do, but I have heard that 512's are not as fast as using 256's. Just a guess.

Keep looking here on the forum and perhaps you will see something that you can change in your BIOS that will make some difference.

It's Samsung RAM ordered from here: http://store.yahoo.com/komusa/sa1gbkit5pc4.html I did install it as described in the motherboard manual. The memory bandwidth benchmarks do exceedingly well on the int buffer operation, and just below par on the float buffer.

I did do a clean install with XP pro... although I have no idea what the Intel INF drivers are.

You should have installed them right away after finishing WinXP installation, just pop in your Asus cd and install them,or use the link above.

Are you running that chip at 133fsb or 200fsb like its suppose to be?

You benches are about half what they should be.

look at the screenshot he posted WarCon,he's actualy overclocked to 3.15ghz.

He's getting a very very slow speed,maybe overheating & cpu throttling kicking in?

What's your temps Balforth?

i just installed the new inf for the 875p chipset to no avail. my temps are very high-- 63-66 degress cel. I have a Thermalright SLK-900u and 92mm Tornado fan on the way... a hot processor can cause slow performance???

Yes when a p4 gets too hot it slows down itself to prevent burning up,if you're getting 66c on a Asus mobo then it's throttling for sure since the Asus mobo show temp 10-15 c lower than actual.

Get a new heatsink but I would buy case fans too,if it's running this hot it must be hot in your case.

I'm one of those "I don't need to go to college" guys who decided to go back years later and I'm living in campus housing. My room is not much bigger than a 3x5 index card. My case IS open, but it's crammed between a wall and my tiny tiny computer desk. I don't have many options when it comes to this.

Would I perhaps be better by turning my settings down so the temp goes down, to decrease throttling?

you running Sandra 2003 SP1? i ran the earlier Sandra and got the same low-scores when i was first overclocking my current rig before i noticed. Also try reinstalling video card drivers and DirectX9 if you havent yet...

try no overclocking,run it at stock and see if that helps but you're going to have to cool it somehow.

Maybe getting an AC in the room? A fan pointing to that direction?

Is there any way you could move the case to an other location? it's pretty much baking in that location now.

i agree..3.0 ghz is plenty of power .. settle with the default speed for now ...when everything gets stable then slowly overclock..


did you have other programs running in the background when you used sandra?

I just stuck a $10 Walmart fan on the side of my case (it's only hitting it at around a 30 degree angle) and turned off the OC stuff... my cpu temp dropped to about 38 degrees, the Dhrystone ALU is at 7106 MIPS and Whetstone FPU is 1936/3624 MFLOPS. My previous results were 4267 and 1078/2394 respectively!!!! It keeps getting cooler and the results keep going up!!! I can't wait to get the new cooling equipment now!!! Thanks a million budman!!!

very glad to hear it.

I had a feeling there was something not right,the minute you told me your temps that was it,P4 throttling a work.

Case temps will always bring down the house. Stock cooling on the 3.0ghz should be just fine. If you don't mind the noice get some fast moving intake and outtake fans. What case do you have? We might be able to recommend some better cooling based on the case. If you don't know the brand check to see where you can install some fans and what type.

However in the meantime your going to have to find a way to keep the air coming in COOL! No matter how well your case/cpu cooling is, if you pull hot air it's just going to move hot around your system.

Just FYI, a P4 processor starts throttling at 67 degrees Celcius. If your mobo was reporting 10-15 degrees bellow what it should have reported, then you would have been running at 77-82 degrees Celcius. Just to let you know, a P4 will SHUT ITSELF OFF at about 95 degrees Celcius. As a personal practice in my P4 overclocking, I try never to go above 50-55 degrees. Watercooling keeps my machine at 35-42 degrees. Definitely worth the investment. But dont let a few stumbles stop you from overclocking....

Obviously you never installed a P4 heatsink,you cant put it the wrong way,there's 4 clips & 2 levers. It's pretty much fool proof.
