I installed the gigabit lan driver, enabled the Onboard LAN and Onboard Lan boot rom in the bios. What can be wrong?

When you plug the cable into the port on the motherboard, do the port's little lights light up? What sort of device are you plugging it into?

The lights don't light up. I'm plugging it into a cable modem. I know the cable modem is fine, because it works with my old computer.

I wonder if something could be causing a short-circuit on the motherboard. You might start by looking at the rear of the computer to make sure that the springy finger things that are supposed to ride on top of the jack blocks (as shown in that photo) didn't dive down into the jacks instead. If that isn't the issue, pull the board out of the case and lay it on cardboard and try operating it outside the case, to see if the jack's lights light up then. If so, something in the case (an unnecessary standoff, perhaps) was probably shorting out the board.

ok, i check the metal clasp things you pointed out and they're on there correctly. also put the mb on a slab of newspaper and tried to see if it worked, and got nothing.

so i started over from scratch, uninstalled the drivers, restarted the comp, installed, and restarted again. i plugged in the rj45 from the cable modem turned it on, and i got the lights next to the rj socket to flash. that didn't happen before. i also notice that the ethernet adaptor is in the device manager, but it wasn't there the first time i installed the driver.

any ideas?

You may have to call your internet service provider and give them your new mac address.

What OS are you using? Am I understanding correctly that you have the ethernet adapter showing in device manager, But you can not get online? Have you tried running any of the "Internet connection" wizards? Run winipgfg(in Win98/ME) or do a "repair" (In XP)? Does your cable modem require a static IP or is it DHCP?

I'm running xp pro.

A friend suggested that go to the command prompt and type in "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew" to get a new IP from my ISP to get running. The cmd prompt said "An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection: unable to contact your DHCP server". So yea, I guess I do have a DHCP?? I dunno, I'm a newbie.

edit: how do i do that "repair" thing?

how do i do that "repair" thing?
Start>settings>Network Connections
Right-Click on Local Area Connection, Choose "repair"
"repair" is just an easier way of doing the iprelease/renew thing that you allready tried. It may work, It may not.

It won't work if the lights around the ports don't light up. I think there's something wrong with the port and/or motherboard. Try a new ethernet cable.

one stays on: That means you have a connection.

the other one flashes: That means you have Ethernet activity.

Do you by chance have a regular Ethernet card you can try? I'm betting you are not getting something with the network connection configured properly.

I tried to get on the net as final act of desperation, before I was about to go to best buy to pick up a nic card, and it worked! I didn't do anything different than the last couple of times I tried to get on the net. It just started working for some reason.

Anyways, I got to download dvd shrink, tmpgenc, and a few other vid encoder etc, and DAMN! this system is fast. My p4 3.0C @ 3.0ghz can re-encode dvd-video way faster than my nec 2500a dvd drive can read the video. I'm going to have to download some hacked firmware for my 2500a just so it can read at the highest speeds possible.

Same board, same issue. Thanks, solved my problem. Had a week of back and forth try this stuff with ASUS to no avail. Just tweaked the springs and no problem.
