Anandtech'rs / Support:

I recently decided to upgrade one of my computers to Windows 2000. This one being a slightly older model. However, to my dissappointment everytime I boot into Windows 2000 (after installation) I receive a HORRIFIC lock-up. This totally brings my day down. I have taken out all other peripherals (sound card etc.) and am only running w/ this:

ASUS P5A mobo
K6/2 400 mhz Processor
Diamond V550 Video (Riva TNT ole school)
128 MG Generic RAM
15GB Maxtor 5400 RPM ata/66
6.4 GB Maxtor 5400 RPM ata/33
HP 8200 series CD-Writer
12X Mitsumi CD-ROM

Is there something that I missed? Some special feature I need to enable. If your thinking it's the RAM; i doubt -- I ran 120 burn-in loops w/ DocMemory v1.45a FLAWLESS. Any & All help (as always) is appreciated.

so all you did different was install w2k?

were you upgrading or doing a fresh install after a format?

I would recommend a fresh install.

I used to run win2k on a p5a-b (baby at size), ran fine. I decided to upgrade to an asus a7v133/duron system that Ive been trying to get to work for two months now .

I have two systems with P5A mobo's running W2K (work and brothers).

I see that you are running a HDD at ATA66, so I assume a Promise controller.

Here is what happened on my work computer. I had done a fresh install on W2K with the newest drivers from the promise site. Everytime I started W2K, it would lock-up then reboot within minutes.

Turns out that my second ATA33 HDD would throw up a disk error at exactly the same time everything would crash.

So I experimented and my system would work under either of these two configurations:

1. New W2K install with newest promise drivers (from site) and NO ata33 disk (the one giving the error).

2. Install W2K and use the embedded W2K drivers, and have the ata33 disk (the one giving the error) hooked up.

Hope this helps

No Promise Controller involved -- so the HD only runs at ata/33 -- I am thinking it might be that Diamond Card w/ win2k. Although ATI's site says there are no problems. Anyone here have any other ideas?
