I'm building my high end computer and now waiting for quads to drop. In the mean time, I bought an Asus P5K Deluxe to OC an e4300. I still can't get past 3.0Ghz (9 x 333). I'm getting frustrated, this is supposed to be a high end board. My DS3 3.3 can get to 3.0Ghz with mild increases in voltages but not over it so I went Asus.

Some said i was hitting the strap limits and do a BSEL mod. Should I have to do a BSEL mod for the P5k Deluxe? I paid $250 for this fricking thing so I wouldn't have any limits. If you are hitting over 3Ghz with e4300 and Asus P5k Deluxe please post your settings.

I really haven't paid much attention to things since i got my E6600, but it seems the E4xxx series is basically crap for high OCs, as are all the newer batch E6xxx series.

Intel seems to be binning all the good ones for other CPU, likely the quads maybe?

You need to find yourself a nice B batch E6600 like i did.

Small local shops are usually best for find the older CPUs, which were clearly better.

Yup. I got the confirmation regarding aggressive binning. They want you to get what you pay for. Currently the better performing cores are going into quad-core SKUs.

My recent 6420 from the egg seems to be a winner so far. 3600 after 15 minutes of tweaking in P5K deluxe bios. At 3656 now, just waiting for Orthos to grind out some more.

Feb 2007 seems to be a good batch. My E6600 is doing great on the ASUS P5K Deluxe, much better than it was on the Gigabyte DS3 rev 3.3 board.

This isn't a very scientific comparison but my e6400 couldn't do 3.2 @ 1.36v (didn't try too hard to get it to run) on my P5N32-E Plus board but on my current P5K it'll do 3.2 @ 1.288v 24hrs orthos stable.

I'm on a DS3 with a e4300, I'm not getting more than 3Ghz but I for one am perfectly happy with that. I don't think it's wort an extra $50-100 for 500Mhz.

if u mean the money for gettin a p35 instead of a ds3.... then its definitly worth those $30 extra since u can upgrade to a Penryn later when they come out... a penryn 4core i think should settle me down for 5 years from now maybe... ( maybe keep a year an a half this e4300 than switch to a 4core and keep it for more than 3 years... i dont need a faster cpu 8i hope

Your observation is very scientific. It's a known fact that NV chipset will require slightly more vCore for the same frequency, due to the its aggressive and versatile nature. There are simply a lot more going on there (# of PCI-E lanes, PATA, SATA, dual network, and whatnot)

Actually the difference I was getting at is the difference in price for the motherboard and the processor. How much does an E6600 run these days? Over $200? Add that to the $60 HS and $35 for the more expensive mobo and that's a significant chunk of change for marginal performance gains. As far as penryn goes, we'll just have to wait and see what the future holds but I for one will be quite pleased with the efficiency of this upgrade path for the 6+ months it takes for penryns release.

Oh i totally i agree on that... A cheap 4300 i think at 3.0ghz is totally fine instead of paying $100 more for 6600 or even $80 more for a 6420... just to get a couple hundred MHs more...

1manArmy Yes i read it through... that thread is fantastic ... but thats for the deluxe version... hope my vanilla p5k can do close to that... lol i only got a 4300 anyways dont need crazy fsb for it...

That's basically my plan to I am trying to get the Gigabyte P35C-DS3R so I can reuse my DDR2 memory and upgrade to 2x2Gb of DDR3-1333 when the price falls to acceptable levels. As well I will overclcoked my E4300 hoping she can take it to 3GHZ, and then upgrade sometime in 2008 for Yorkfield MCM Quad Core.
