Ya Ya, Blah blah, SLI is a ripoff. It's not efficient enough. life isn't perfect. the world aint fair.

but my rig is a lot faster than yours!! lets write that part in stone

right now I have 3 identical 28" Hanns-g 3ms monitors. I'm gonna run nvidia's surround gaming setup... no, they don't do 3d. I don't have THAT kinda money..

SLI is fine, but tri-SLI one year later is just dumb cause by then there'll be much better cards out which you could SLI and would be faster than three 580's.

I'm not really gaming on my PC right now, but... your rig may be a lot faster, but I'll bet mine sounds a lot better. And will have a nicer picture once I get a better display.

I didn't mean to be so obtrusive. I was just playing. I'm happy to have a top of the line rig again.. and btw, I did some more research into the prospect of triple-SLI and I came to the same conclusion as you: it's not worth it, even if I had the money to do it because the 3rd PCI-E won't even run faster than 4x!!!

am I right??

Maybe i could add a PhysX card someday...? I just.. I want to preserve the ability the add more performance down the line. that's all. Since I already have 4 sticks of 4gb RAM (16gb DDR3 1866) well, I'm not going to upgrade the RAM before i buy another motherboard someday. and I don't THINK I'm ever going to upgrade the CPU..? maybe so, because the 1155 board design is brand new. and I would hope that intel has new chips lined up for at least a couple of years from now..?

The reason I was so attached to the idea of building on top of these GTX 580 (evga vanilla) is because THEY COST SOOOO MUCH DARN MONEY!!! Lol. I have been a big time gamer, for a long time. but this is the first time I have spent OVER A THOUSAND BUCKS on just my graphics card solution alone!!

btw I went with the GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD5-B3
$249 on newegg. I'm pretty sure that's the best choice right now. it sure looks the coolest! compared to the Fatal1ty, which looks like a joke...!! lol
does ayone have thoughts..? thx!

I will say that P67 is not for you. These boards have a limited amount of PCI lanes and will require PLEX chips to add what you're looking for. That adds up latency very quickly. On top of that just running two video cards in SLI/Crossfire will drop them to 8x/8x.

You also wouldn't have much of a chance of using any add-on cards.

Ok , hm.. well, let's say that I just stick to the 2 x gtx 580 right now and in the future. because I would imagine that this is PLENTY of horsepower in the most important parts (cpu, ram , motherboard, video cards). as i understand it - having two cards at 8x/8x isn't particularly wasteful? It's.. it's mostly worth doing right?

I've had my heart set on this 2600k cpu for a long time now. I may just settle on this because I am READY to move on and to build my next rig, so that I can finally try out SLI gaming for the first time!!

do you really think it's worthwhile for me to .... well, the only thing I could do now is eBay all my parts and then buy a different setup. and I don't think that's likely! not as long the 2x sli video cards can in fact perform almost as good as they are supposed to.

edit: also of note, I do have a full speed pci-e SATA2 controller card with 4 ports. So what that means is that the Gigabyte, while it only has 6 SATA ports (4 sata3, 2 sata2). when you add the 4 ports from my controller pci-e with the original 6 ports.. & I can run a LOT of really fast hard drives at the same time! and that's a big deal, for me

in conclusion, most everything about this Gigabyte board makes me VERY happy! it's just.. the concern over the video cards. but, I am pretty sure that running the two GTX 580 at 8x/8x is in fact good enough...?

a bunch of gigabyte boards and a few asrock boards showed up on newegg a few minutes ago....

AND THEY'RE HERE

oh wait they're not!

so as soon as I saw your post I checked and Newegg listed Extreme 4s in stock for $159.99

within 45 mins I called Newegg to inquire as to why I never received my RMA email when they now are selling them to the general public. The CSR said "we don't have stock of those and I don't see it on the website at all". Sure enough I go back to the website and do a search and there is zero mention of Extreme4s.....

she probably thought I was smoking something

I show Extreme 4s on their site right now

Yep there they are again.....those mysterious vanishing and reappearing mobos.

All I can say is I'd better have a Newegg email when I get home tonight from work, otherwise I'm not so happy that they're selling them to the general public first while skipping me......

Should be fine. The thing that would worry me is that nvidia surround carries a large performance hit reguardless of PCIe bandwidth.
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/08/23/gtx_480_sli_pcie_bandwidth_perf_x16x16_vs_x8x8/1

Ya, sure, I believe it! I figure, some games will be best on one screen.. some will rock out on all 3! I look forward, especially to my favorite RTS games - starcraft 2, spread out on 3 screens, I love it

the most productive use of the three monitor setup will be for my production, literally for video editing, audio production, web design, etc.... I am ESPECIALLY excited to be running my video composition apps - adobe after effects & adobe premiere. using 2 screens was cool - but it really sucks, having your main view be.. looking right down the middle of 2 screens. It feels a lot more validating to look at one screen down the middle - then have two on either side for peripheral vision.

This will be a GREAT rig!!

Thanks for your help guys!! I've been lurking here @ the forums for 10 years now, only recently am I really feeling the vibe to post..

ANYWAYS...

after reading that article, and taking note that INDEED, there is a noticeable difference between 16x/16x and 8x/8x when we are talking about gaming at EXTREMELY high resolution on a triple-monitor NVIDIA Surround setup.......... well, in that case, you get almost a 10% loss in performance!!

I dunno. Am I reading this right? can this motherboard, the

GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD7-B3 LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

can it run two GTX 580 at the same time, both of them at full 16x/16x? Look at that price! I can't decide if that's even... possibly ... feasible. I've invested somuch already...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-480-_-Product

edit: lol, no, not in any chance I could actually consider purchasing that. it's just, it's against principle, i have to draw the line somewhere. that's too darn expensive!

I ordered an Extreme4 around 330 CST today and I already have a tracking number.

Was the extreme4 priced at 159 when you originally bought it?

I called Newegg as I still haven't gotten an email. The guy said that they have divided their stock into a pile to handle returns and a pile to sell to new people. Wonder if they held back enough to do RMAs or if they're just sick of waiting to sell some new ones.....

I guess I'm really in no hurry cause my P67 works fine right now....

Anyway to answer your question, it was $152.99 "on sale" when I got it....it was always listed at 159.99 but it generally was always "on sale" for 152.99 for those few weeks before the recall....plus I paid $2.49 shipping. So its a little more expensive now I guess, but not crazy.

That's probably what they did with the Extreme6 too. It showed up for sale on Newegg 2 or 3 days before I received an email.

I bought my Extreme6 at $195 w/free shipping. I believe it's currently listed at $220 w/$10 shipping. Ouch...quite an increase.

I was turned off of Gigabyte after purchasing a high(er) end NF3 939 board and having non-stop issues, but the tech support and customer service (or lack thereof) really killed it for me. If I can help it, I'll never buy the brand again.

AsRock on the other hand...the P67 Extreme6 was the first AsRock product I've purchased, and has been rock solid stable with a 2600K. I was impressed at the features the board had for the price.

Been with Gigabyte for quite some time now and I have had very good success with them. But I have to say the Asrock Extreem6 looked extremely tempting. Been looking at for a few days now and it had been sold out. Just received my e-mail today that Newegg got them in and I ordered one. It will be my first Asrock board. It seems that this board has a good bang for its buck with lots of features. Looking forward to see what this board can really do when it arrives.

I also ordered another SSD (C300) and a 2600K for my replacement P67A-UD3P. sweetness.

GB has really improved their customer support. I've RMAed two things with them and had a full turn around within 6 business days. My advanced RMA is coming in on my UD4, for example, so they're doing okay by me.
