yea i grew up in PA. all the liquor stores are state run, have the same strict hours (they just started being allowed to sell on sundays), and have all the same prices. i honestly didn't know you could order online til i moved.

What's with the stringent laws? The state makes a boatload of money because they're the only game in town.

If you have trusworthy and reliable friends or family out of state ... Could they possibly order it, and then ship it to you in a plain unmarked box? Sure it would be pretty costly due to having to pay shipping twice ... and there may be some question about the legallity of said practice ... so I am not suggesting that you do this, I'm just thinking ... hmm maybe that would work for you?

Or just stock up when you're out of state. Pennsylvania actually operates a bunch of discount liquor stores that are much cheaper than the regular stores, but they're all located near the borders of other states. Obviously targeted at the smart people who buy their liquor out of state.

Man I'm glad I don't live in Pennsylvania.

Puritan morals as a facade to hide greed? Where have I read this book before?

...and living in NJ is better how? NJ is the armpit of the US and New York's landfill. Taxes are higher in NJ, and $6 for a pack of smokes is pretty silly. You have full-service gas, which can be cool during low-peak times, but it really sucks when it is busy and you sit for 5-10 mins just waiting for someone to come over to the pump and start filling the tank, then another 5-10 min wait after the pump cuts off.

and for the record, my wife is from South Jersey so we travel there frequently.

So you can't even pump your own gas even if you want to? That would annoy me too much.

Er... ok, let me rephrase that.

As an alcoholic, I'm glad I don't live in Pennsylvania.

I don't want to turn this into a pissing match about whose state sucks worse. I like living in NJ, you like living in PA, and we can still be friends.

But at least get your facts straight.

Pennsylvania is the largest importer of trash in the United States,

And our taxes are high because NJ consistently gets the least or second least amount of money from the federal government for every dollar we pay in federal taxes. So what the federal government pays for in other states has to be paid for by the state or local government in NJ.

About a year ago I moved from Texas to central Pennsylvania. I just worked with the assumption that Texas had some old school Blue Laws, but after moving to PA - this place is the worse state hand's down.

The liquor laws are just crazy and simply put very dumb. Also there are tons of taxes and they still don't manage to have enough money - unless the state legislatures need a pay raise, of course.

Bad liquor laws, arguably the worse highway system in the country and we get taxed for it . . . this state blows.

I was just busting your chops--I don't really have anything against Jersey, really. I just needed a reason to say Jersey is the armpit of the country.

Pennsylvania has it's quirks, but I'll still take it over living in MD. If a debate comes up about MD though, I'll be fully ready to engage. I lived most of my life in that crappy state...I am so glad I am out of there.

On top of that, the price of beer!

I visited my dad and normal cheap beer was like $20 a case

Same stuff is $10 a case in WI

I never understood the full service hate.

only time I've ever had to wait at a gas station is when all the pumps are in use, which wouldn't really be any different if the gas stations were self-serve (possibly moreso, since you'd have to deal with people standing around talking on their cellphone, running into the mini-store, etc).

meanwhile, during the cold winters and hot summers, you get to stay inside your comfortable car.

Why double ship? Your friends could just buy it where they buy their booze and send it to you. I don't think anybody is worried about the legality of the whole thing except for online retailers.

The highway thing isn't argueable.

Comeon guys..if we didnt have these laws there would be riots in the streets!

Buying hard stuff, and beer in the same place! NO WAY! Your talking like the devil.

lol. yeah they are lame but really..its still easy to get beer...just think before hand...

Still...stupidest law in PA: If you go to a bar and want to buy 4 six packs of beer....you cant...not all at once. You have to buy two, go to your car, put it in, and then go back and buy two more. Its true....And then they let you by cases of beer at a drive through without getting out of your car. Strange.

The funniest thing is that I'm a Marylander going to Penn State. There are LOTS of people who don't know it's done any other way than this and their heads always explode when I mention places like Troyer's Liquor, where you can buy anything from top shelf vodka to piss-water Miller Lite. And Slim-Jims. And gasoline. And it's not in any way affiliated with the state government.
