I was at Staples today picking up a business order when the guy in electronics told me about some clearances. Most of them sucked - prices still too high but this I thought was a great deal.
Pacific Digital 32x12x48x External CD-RW Drive USB 2.0 with USB pci card for $48.50
It is in a black rubber case with black bexel. The sku is 492667.
We use these a lot at work so I called my boss and picked up 3.
They are not widely available from what the electronics guy said but they are certainly worth a look.

PS I picked up some extras so if you want one and can't find it, PM me.

UPDATE: Just got 3 more. PM me if you want one

I posted this over at fat wallet forums yesterday when the deal first started, expect many stores to be sold out already. Some people were grabbing up to 8 at a time off the shelves and the search for lingering drives has begun.

oh and btw these were normal stock drives and not and old model so there are a ton of them around, just gotta find ones that haven't been bought! that and expect ebay to be flooded with cheap drives (it's already begun) so I wouldnt count on reselling them for any profit worth working for.

I just got one of these for 129.99 from Staples.com on 10/29. I used coupon & rebate so it cost me about $60 total. I just called Staples customer service and requested a price adjustment and was informed that the only way I could get an adjustment was to find a store with stock and go in and have the store PM the drive....???? that doesn't seem right. I have been a huge fan of Staples for quite some time now, I am very disappointed right now. I informed CSR that I will no longer be using the ".com" any longer if that is the game they are gonna play. They are still available online for 139.99.

The drive is a Cyber Drive.....another dissapointment.

Yeah, a store usually has 2-8 drives of these, but people already bought these up pretty much.(I was told at a store someone just came in and bought 4 drives and 2 employers took the last 2 so I got none.)

I think you can get one cheap from e-gay, since it's already flooding there.

Did you get them to ring it up? They still are labeled $140 or whatever at most stores. Once they ring it up it will show $48.50. If not get a scan of the reciept and show them. They should PM. Check FW for the scans.

I picked the last one up today at our local store, $48.50
ThanksOP!

There is a expired $30 MIR for this CD-RW on 11/9/02. I don't know if Staples will honor it. I'll mail the rebate anyhow. It is one per name/family/house.

I read from another forum that someone called staples rebate center and staples might honor it. Staples actually gives you 10 days grace after the end date. Worth a try!

I think the 10 day grace period refers to the postmark date not purchase date.

If you are living in the GSP area (Greenville/Spartanburg SC) - I went to the Staples store in Greenville.
They were sold out - but the guy checked the other stores in the area and both Greer and Easley had
3 drive on hand (minus the one they sold today) - so no guarantee that they still have some - but
worth a try!

The burner/box weighs alot.

I think this box weighs about 4lbs.

I shipped a 4~5lbs. book via USPS Priority mail and it cost me ~$10.

been following the forums for awhile, FINALLY able to join up! great deal, picked up one for myself yesterday, unfortunate if the rebate doesn't work. Wish I Had A Receipt Copy During That Rebate Period *wink*

Got in on some other great stuff at Staples too, like 2 of those Maxtor 120 externals. They look good on raid!

I picked up three (2 for me and 1 for a friend) today at the Madison, AL, Staples. They have no more left at that store. I actually only want these for the enclosures (a good USB 2.0 enclosure costs $50+), and may part with the internal drives and USB 2.0 PCI cards. Hopefully the enclosure will come apart fairly easily.

E.

EDIT: The PD enclosure comes apart pretty easily and I replaced the drive with my Pioneer A04 DVD-RW drive. FYI, the drive that Pacific Digital had included is a Cyberdrive CW058D. Not a special drive and I will be selling it.

EDIT2: For the heck of it, I put the Cyberdrive in another USB 2.0 enclosure, updated the drive with firmware from Cyberdrive's website, and burned a few discs last night. Burning was performed using Nero Express with Maxell 40x media (burned at 32x). Each disc was roughly 700MB in size. Resulting discs are good according to Nero Express' verify feature.

The Charlottesville, VA store was out of stock, but they were nice enough to ask a nearby store (Stanton, VA) to send one for me . Stanton still has 3 more left.

What brand burner is this? Any good? Also, how easy would it be to hook up an IDE hard drive to the enclosure? thanks!

I have one of these which I might be willing to sell to another AT'er for $48.50 plus $13.50 shipping (USPS Priority with delivery confirmation and insurance, this is not negotiable) plus $10 hassle fee = $72 shipped to your door.

It's brand new, still shrink wrapped, never opened, external USB 2.0 CD-RW if you are interested please PM me.
