I went to one this morning. None on the shelf. I asked csr if they had any he went to the lockup and said there were none. :frown: I have one other local one to check but it is snowing so much I don't want to go out again. I hate to call all of the employees will grab them up and leave me high and dry.

BTW I did notice the pacific digital 12x dvd burner was on clearance. I don't remember the price but I think it was $49. Just something to keep an eye on over the next couple of weeks.

I picked one up at the Staples near 100 Oaks mall in Nashville. They have 6 more in the back room so you have to ask for one. I got a NEC 2500A serial number 41FBSxxxxxx manufactured in January 2004 with firmware v1.06. Should I flash it to the latest NEC firmware and then go looking for Herrie's firmware? Can I flash it with the NEC 2510A firmware? Any info and links to firmware would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ! Also, thanks to TestGuyCT for the hot deal!!!!

Hey Baclips6, how do you tell if they are LDW-851S or LDW-811S? Is there some forum out there with info regarding these PD drives? I searched the RPC1.org pages, but nothing. I did find a Lite-On thread in the CDFreaks forum I think, but I'd like to figure out exactly which Lite-On drive I have before I flash...

There should be a Lite-On IT Corp label on the drive itself. It will show whether you have a LDW-811S or LDW-851S (it's good you checked, because I've gotten both types in the Pacific Digital boxes previously).

Have you opened the boxes yet?

To my knowledge they are marked with the manufacturer decal on top of the drive. That should have the model# on it.

Staples in Orange, Ct still had 4 left. The clearance shelf is buried in the far right corner of the store. The drives are marked $130 but ring up at $37.50. All the drives began with either 42 or 43 followed by 10 more digits all numberic, no alpha characters, and had U-30213-RV2 below the UPC . I grabbed a 42 and it turns out to be a Liteon 812s. Still I'm happy because I have always been a Liteon fan.

Just opened one of them, the other I'm giving to my little cousin as an X-Mas present. To my surprise I got an NEC drive! My serial number began with: 42E.... nice huh? When I opened the box, I was disappointed to find that it was a full size drive, which meant it definitely wasn't a Lite-On. Thinking I got one of those BTC drives, I then looked at the label and BAM! It was an NEC drive!

Sniff! Sniff!

I Love you Guys!

I got mine in Gilroy, CA last night.

The Mgr on duty had to get it from the back room.

Wanted another, but it was the last one they had and according to the Manager's phone calls to other stores there was not another one at any nearby Staples.

Thanks!

Thanks for the links. Flashed my PD/NEC drive with Herrie's firmware and it now supports dual layer and gives more burn speed choices. I installed mine in a Link Depot external enclosure that connects via firewire and USB. Burst rate was 22MB for firewire and 19MB for USB. Picked up some of those Khypermedia DVD+R 8X 25 packs at OfficeMax for $5 AR ($3) and they burn fine at 8X using the USB connection. Herrie's firmware unlocked the DVD rip speed from a flat 2X but this drive is still pretty slow on ripping movies - the Lite-On is much faster.

FYI, you can call Staples and have them search the SKU and see if they have any in stock... (556595)
