Looks like the Kypermedia drive in their catalog :-(

I won't know until Friday, like most of you, what OM will be having in their Sunday ad; but I did hold the box in my hand and wrote down the model#, UPC#, partial SN (that box SN was Pxxxxx = BTC), and it was the PD 8x+- as I mentioned already.

I'd be more than happy to get one out the door for $69.99 plus tax so I don't have to do much driving around. (They're killing us out here now one the left coast, gas just went up another 8 cents while I was visiting my sisters earlier tonite:|)

Can anyone briefly list the pro's and con's for the PD Lite-On oem models and if the NEC oem is better or worse performance/media-wise.

I've read the recent review at CdrLabs on the PD LIte-On being a bit different than the Lite-On label itself (think it was the 811s?) And I recall in earlier threads here or elsewhere that one of the PD Lite-On's had problems with Nero (or visa-versa) and had bitsetting?

851?
811s?
Nec ND-2500A?

Thanks,
...russ

It will be a PD, I/O Magic, and Khypermedia. $119.99-$50 rebate.
PD is dual format.
That manager is BS for sure. No single store will carry 200 Drives of the same brand. No store will even carry 200 Drives total. Even the delivery center does not carry that many drives. So he's crap. Don't believe him. At most 20 drives in stocks for the same PD brand.

From what I've read, so far, the Lite-On 811 and 851 have the same performance. The reason for the change was because they changed the laser diode and had to compensate for it. Do more research for yourself to verify this. I 'm pretty sure the color of the bezel will change the performance.

You're on your own to find reviews about the other brands.

You're probably right. I've heard that the black bezel Lite-On 851's are considerably faster than the beige models. If I can't find an 851 on Sunday, I'm gonna get an 811 and paint the bezel black. I'll post back with my benchmark results!

I'll bet the racing stripes on your car make it go faster, too.

OM Flyer for Feb 22d

Select your state at above page for OM Sunday flyer. The drive is on the left side of the front page. NOTE: The drive listed is only an 8x Plus, BUT the PD 8x is the second listed sku. There are 3 sku's listed. MysticMan has posted now of this too and has a good listing of the drives gleaned from past threads here. MysticMan thread

I'll have to stop by my closest OM tonight to talk with a nice woman mgr I've been talking with.

Well, I finally stopped by OM and all eight of the drives behind the counter were BTC so I passed on my raincheck. Bummer.

I got a call from my OM yesterday because I had a raincheck on these from the last deal and they finally got more in. He told me I could pick it up for $79.99 now or wait until next week when it'll be 69.99. I haven't gone there to see if it's a Liteon or not but I'll try to post when I do.

I guess I will wait but it takes sooo long to burn a dvd even at 4x. I guess I need to hurry up and dump the 2x I replaced before it isn't worth anything.

Very nice deal. Must resist.

I'm not sure if it's actually working but I saw mention of a hacked firmware that'll let you turn some 4x Liteons into their 8x cousins. I read this at cd freaks.

Update: While YMMV hopefully... I was allowed into my local OM's lockup room to examine the 15 PD 8x's they had, and ALL were BTC's based on the SN beginning with a letter "P".

I just scored a PD with a 429xxxxxxxxx serial number. Not sure but think it's a liteon. Haven't even opened it yet.

Salesman brought out a Khypermedia DVD+R at first. I asked for a PD if he had one....he looked a little peeved but retrieved one for me. (No drives were on display or behind the counter.)

Its an 851S. Woo hoo!

Does OM offer in-store pickup? I got this coupon they mailed me that I'm itching to use. I was wanting to go check out if they have any at the store, then come back and order it online/phone and go back and pick it up since the coupon can only be used online or on the phone.

My local OM only had a sale label next to the Kypermedia drive, but had an empty box for the PD drives (shelf price of $199) and one I/O Media drive on the shelf. The staff was completely oblivious about the sale situation, but gladly price checked the PD drives for me and grabbed one from the back with a S/N starting with 4. I now have a Lite-On 811S for ~$80 with tax/stamp and am pleased.

S/N: 481351xxxxxx, 8x DVDRW Dual Format IDE Kit on label (those have been 851S drives according to some reports, but not here). I can't complain though.

I got a BTC s/n stated with P. Is it worth to keep this one at this prices compared to lite-on?

I haven't opened the package up, but the serial started with 4293XXXXXXXX. I'm assuming it's a Lite-On per the quote above.

I got a coupon in the mail a few weeks ago for $25 off a purchase. How much pestering of the CSR do I need to do in order for me to use my coupon? I called yet got rejected. Does it really depend on which CSR I talk to?

BTW: You CAN order online/phone and pick up in store.

I got the coupons too, mine expired 2/21.

Also, at least for the Khypermedia 8X version (since they have 3 brands potentially available this week), at least on the website they limit any coupon reductions (guess due to the IR):

AFAIK, no.

But you could phone order and return it to a store to exchange for what you want, but do so quickly so you can get to B&M before sale ends Saturday. 2nd option would be to try to order online and get your coupon entered that take a printout to store to see if they'll do same deal for you. Good luck

All I came across were BTC's which I could have gotten a month ago. I'm not badmouthing the BTC's, there's a good link to info at cdfreaks in one of the links at top of post.

People get too concerned about hardware specs sometimes. Bottom line is that it will suit your own personal purposes.
