Update: 2/29... NEC drives are now being widely reported, as well as the Lite-On and BTC oem's. $10 drop in OTD price this week at OM but same AR price. Staples also has PD's on sale and can be PM'd to OM but AR pricing a bit higher.

Update: While YMMV hopefully... Saturday afternoon I was allowed into my closest local OM's lockup room to examine the 15 PD 8x's they had, and ALL were BTC's based on the SN beginning with a letter "P".

OK... While purchasing one of the Minolta PagePro printers earlier in the week, I asked the OM mgr about whether they might have any of the Pacific Digital 8x DVD burners in stock as I've had a raincheck for one since mid January - waiting for a chance for a Lite-On.

He tell me that he's got a pallet load of them out back and they go on sale Sunday at what he said was going to be a much better price than last time they sold them. I mentioned I had a raincheck but he insisted that these PD 8x's had new software and thus a new UPC. I had him bring out a box so I could examine for any differences.

Guess what? Was he right?

Same box, same model, same upc, same, same, same. BUT I noted that it appeared to be one of the BTC oem's.

Anyway he said he had over 200 of them on hand, so it looks like it might be raining PD 8x's this coming weekend in SoCal if not nationwide at your local OM.

So start looking to see if there's an even better PM offering that posted and quoted from IRC5 last month

oh... and leave one for me. I called the mgr back today, but he wouldn't give the price details, only said he'd hold one for me. But I didn't want him to become aware of the BTC/PD oem differences, so I said thanks anyways since 200 won't go that fast.

I got a call from my OM yesterday because I had a raincheck on these from the last deal and they finally got more in. He told me I could pick it up for $79.99 now or wait until next week when it'll be 69.99. I haven't gone there to see if it's a Liteon or not but I'll try to post when I do.

Gahhh! I have a 4x dvd burner and hardly ever use it... I can't see the reason to jump up to an 8x dvd burner for right now... But, at these prices... must resist... must resist...

Anyone know how long until the 16x dvd burners come out? IIRC, the max possible speed for dvd burning will be at 16x. I don't want to do what I did last time - jumped on a 32x cd burner, only to never be able to justify the price of a 48x or a 52x burner for the few seconds I'd shave off a burn time... despite burning hundreds of cd's. (well, that is, until the 52x burners were $4.99 last week)

edit: I think I'll jump on this, then wait until the 16x dual layer dvd burners hit the market...
Or, maybe I'll get an 8x dual layer later this year when they come out, if the media is a reasonable price. It'd be nice to just make 1:1 backup copies of my existing dvd collection without farting around with compression.

They don't even have 8x media out yet, so 16x drives are not quite on on their way. I'd go for the 8x for now, esp for $70.

If a Lite-On is your preference, here's some info from CD Freaks forum:

Pacific Digital 8X +/- Writer

Serial number starts with: 4813 = Lite-On 851, Black
Serial number starts with: 4823 = Lite-On 811 white
Serial number starts with: 43** = Lite-On 811
Serial number starts with: P ** = BTC
Serial number starts with: 41D6H7432XX = NEC

My PD/Lite-on 851S works great from the last OM deal. DVD+R at 8X, DVD-R at 4X. Maybe you were referring to 8X DVD-R media? None of the PDs will burn 8X DVD-R, only 4X.

What i have heard is that these +R discs from meritline are RICOHJPN R01-002. RITEKR03 is actually 8x +R media from ritek. Not sure where to get it though.

Verbatim's 8x DVD+R media is also available. At more than $3 a disc, its hella expensive.

Last time I was at OM they had PD's new 8x8 Dual drives. Judging by the specs, they were rebadged NEC ND-2500A's. I wonder if these will be on sale. I'd take an NEC over a BTC DRW1008 any day.

Some company like Nec and Pioneer are saying that their 8X dual dvdrw will be able to burn dual layers w/ just a firmware flash. But don't listen to what they say completely. Not until the fireware comes out anyway.

You might try checking out the 10pack TDK 4x DVD+R @ Staples thread. I picked up a 10pack of the DVD+R discs a few weeks ago from my local Staples and they are Ricoh's that burn fine at 8x in my Lite-on 811s (rebadged PD drive).

Don't believe the hype. If I was a betting man, I'd bet my retirement fund that neither the Pioneer A07 nor the NEC ND-2500A will write dual layer discs.

Dang it! I jumped on the 4x Liteon at the Office Depot on black friday figuring the 8x would stay pricey for a while yet. :wine:

I guess I will wait but it takes sooo long to burn a dvd even at 4x. I guess I need to hurry up and dump the 2x I replaced before it isn't worth anything.

Very nice deal. Must resist.

While DVD burner prices are falling, blank media is not. I'll hold off buying one til they drop to $.50 or less. And they will...

That and not being about to make 1:1 backups of my DVD collection is what has been holding me off...
