Not quite true about the lite-ons. Lite-ons serials start with 4, and are ALL NUMBERS. The NEC version looks like it starts with a 4 as well, but there are some letters in the serial number.Originally posted by: BW5150
It looks like any drive that starts with a 4 in the serial is a liteon.
And u want to stay away from the ones that start with P.
From reading this thread, it looks like you got a lite-on 851s (although I don't quite buy into the idea that all serials starting with 429... are 851s - I've read many posts where people made statements regarding various serials and models only to see someone else refute them because they got a similar serial but a different model). Anyway, if the box you got is 12 digits, ALL NUMBERS, then its a Lite-on for sure. I don't think there is much performance difference, if any, between the 811s and the 851s.Originally posted by: johneetrash

If you got a Liteon 851S, did your drive appears smaller in the box as when you shake the box, the drive moves around?

The drive WAS shorter when I mounted it on top of my CDRW. I didn't really shake the box, but when I opened it up, it wasn't in the box straight cuz the foam thingy was broken and it was sitting on at an angle. I hooked it up and it works fine now though (for watching movies). I have no DVDR's to test out yet.

If everyone will post the first eight digits of their serial number, I'll post and add the information to the previous list I compiled to give everyone a better idea of which drive is in the box....
