It looks like any drive that starts with a 4 in the serial is a liteon.
And u want to stay away from the ones that start with P.

Not quite true about the lite-ons. Lite-ons serials start with 4, and are ALL NUMBERS. The NEC version looks like it starts with a 4 as well, but there are some letters in the serial number.
The ones that start with "P" are BTC drives. Some people like 'em, most people don't.

From reading this thread, it looks like you got a lite-on 851s (although I don't quite buy into the idea that all serials starting with 429... are 851s - I've read many posts where people made statements regarding various serials and models only to see someone else refute them because they got a similar serial but a different model). Anyway, if the box you got is 12 digits, ALL NUMBERS, then its a Lite-on for sure. I don't think there is much performance difference, if any, between the 811s and the 851s.

BTW, I have both an 811s and a khypermedia made in china (cyberdrive). I like the cyberdrive better. It has lower errors rates than the lite-on. It pains me to say that too since I'm a big lite-on fan.

Here's a slightly more complete list of Lite-On serial numbers I compiled over a month ago:

Bastidges...

When to my local OM & asked for the DVD burners on sale this week, "We only have Khypermedia". Then as a goof I call back that same store & ask for inventory. I use the Pacific Digital-specific item #20678401, "Sure, we have 35 instock"...

Grrrr...don't let 'em fool ya guys. Bet a # of stores are holding out the PD in the stockroom for Subs. Ask for inventory on the item # above as an absolute verification.

May not help everyone, but worth a try.

Posted this in the main OM DVD burner thread as well.

What brand of blank disc you guys use? Anything cheap and reliable?

I use Ritek G03, less than $50 shipped from newegg for a 50 spindle. Never a coaster on my 851S or my old Pioneer A03, and 100% compatibility with many DVD players. 4X, but that is fast enough for me.

Ya know, come to think of it, I didn't see any blank media. *goes and checks*
No blank media. Was it suppose to come with blank media? I got the drive, ide cable, PowerDVD disc, and Sonic MyDVD disc. This is a COLD deal if I didn't get any blank media!!!!!!!!!

OK. I will check when I go to work tomorrow.
Thanks.
If you got a Liteon 851S, did your drive appears smaller in the box as when you shake the box, the drive moves around?

Another serial number to add to group, 47xxx..., was a Lite-on 811S beige. OfficeMax guy was very polite and helpful. I asked if he could look for one starting with a "4" so it would match my other Lite-on. No problem, returned after a few minutes - said only one started with "4" others started with a "1". Now I have no idea what a "1" means, perhaps they were "P1xxx..". I couldn't resist a second one at the $69+tax price. Great drive, great deal. Thanks

Scored one at Las Vegas. The serial number is 41a********. And a NEC ND-2500a is in box. Not try it yet. Thanks!

The drive WAS shorter when I mounted it on top of my CDRW. I didn't really shake the box, but when I opened it up, it wasn't in the box straight cuz the foam thingy was broken and it was sitting on at an angle. I hooked it up and it works fine now though (for watching movies). I have no DVDR's to test out yet.

It's kinda suck that it did not come with any blank DVD disk.

What does it list on the box? Somewhere it might mention "included in this box".

Bad Dude, not all vendors supply any media with their drives. Micro Advantage supplies a DVD RW blank with their oem's BTC drives. Presumably the PD 8x BTC does not have any test media either.

If everyone will post the first eight digits of their serial number, I'll post and add the information to the previous list I compiled to give everyone a better idea of which drive is in the box....
