I recently put together an HTPC using an Antec isk 300-65 case. It only has mounting spaces for 2.5" drives. I wanted to use a 3.5" drive, so I removed one of the brackets which made enough room for it. Problem is I had to jerry-rig it with some cardboard (on the bottom side to level out the seating plain and to avoid any shorting issues) and 3M clear packaging tape to keep everything in place. It seems to work fine, but wanted to know if there might be some heating issues I would run in to.

There might be, because a HDD uses either airflow or touching metal to dissipate heat. You may want to monitor it for a while. IIRC most HDDs were fine up to 60ºC.

I have used pencils in the past to make a platform for hard drives to rest on in large drive bays. Cut pencils to length, hot glue in place. Put drive on top of pencils and use a dab of hot glue to hold drive in place.
the hot glue peels off if you need to remove it.

Why can't you use a 2.5" HD or SSD?

I wanted the greater capacity.

I got rid of the cardboard and tape. I actually found a more elegant solution. There's just enough room to put some motherboard stand offs in between the bracket and the hard drive, and still have everything fit. Screw the stand offs into the hard drive, then drill four holes in the bracket and screw the bracket onto standoffs.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
