Hey everyone
My packard bell does not shutdown. As soon as u plug the power cable in it turns on and if you hold the power button in it does absolutely nothing. You turnoff computer/shutdown and it jus goes throught the standard procedure but just doesnt shut down. I though id try bios so i placed the jumper on the clear bios pins then put it back and when i plugged the power in didnt turn on. YAY!!! i thought, but that didnt last long, i loaded the bios defaults ran computer, press shutdown and the same damn problem. Even the prob with pluggin the power in and the computer turning straigh on came back.
What do i do. Please help me

Thanks

You might want to add some specifics to help clear things up...

A few basics would be nice (computer specs, Operating System, etc...) as well as when the problem started and what you had done around that time (software install, updates, upgrades, etc...).

I was surprised to see 'Packard Bell' in the Topic. IIRC, they didn't make anything later then a Pentium 1 that had Win 95 on it. IIRC, they were plagued with problems and weren't the best quality. To see one mentioned in the forums initially comes across as a prank.

IF this is a legitimate post and not a prank, I offer the following:

It could be caused by running a newer version of Windows than the one originally installed. I know when I installed Windows 2000 on my mom's old Gateway machine for her several years ago, that originally had Windows 98SE on it, I had a similar problem. Wouldn't shut down completely. After an hour on the phone with Microsoft tech support, I was able to get the machine to where it would shut down by pressing the power button twice after the "It's okay to turn off your computer now" message would appear on screen during shut down. Worked fine that way from then on out.

It's also possible -- maybe even LIKELY -- that you have a malware infection. An old Packard Bell might not be capable of running a sufficiently patched, new version of Windows nowadays. Nor is it likely to have enough CPU power & RAM to run adequate anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware programs (if you could even find any that would run on Windows 95 anymore). May be time for a new computer (or just reformat & see what happens).

I would check the wiring on the powerswitch. I know it's low level, but something could be stuck or come loose. I had an IBM do this to me and the button was stuck in the depressed position internally so the external part of the button did nothing.

If it turns on when you plug the power cable in, it's a hardware issue. Check your power switch wiring.

I had the same issue, turns out the motherboard was defective.

Packard Bell are you kidding me? I have one boxed in the attic to show my grand kids what a POS I had as a child.
