Let's see them throw a 101 mph fast ball in the ninth inning after throwing 130 pitches over the last 2 1/2 hrs.

It helps to be 6'3" and 230lbs too or whatever he is. Let's see his vertical, 40 time, etc.. Take a look at Brad Penny, 90 year old Mariano Rivera, and countless other pitchers that wouldn't finish a charity 5k run. It's a freaking skill with very little athletics involved.

You are taking the award far too literal.

It's a popularity contest and nothing more.

Rodgers is the best player of his position, which is the most value position of his sport, which is the most popular sport in the US.

That's it.

I understand that, as do you. There are many in this thread though that are trying to make the argument that Aaron Rodgers or Justin Verlander is a better athlete than Bryan Clay with a straight face.

They are athletes that were born with certain gifts and they have honed those gifts to be as perfect as possible for their sport. You seem to weigh the accomplishments more of someone that was born with certain gifts and has honed their gifts toward track and field. Isn't that rather narrow minded?

What a joke. QB is mostly a skill position. A pitcher was number 2 as well..

This is the best athlete alive period. 44" vertical, 4.3 40 time, etc... Dude makes nfl athletes look amateurish.

Calvin Johnson has those times and jumps, and he's also 6'5" 235 lbs, can catch, run you over, and I'm sure he can hit if he really needs to. That does not impress you, athletically?

edit: You keep trying to gloss over "skill" as an attribute to being an athlete. That's inane. A total athlete doesn't just run in a straight lone, or throw a ball accurately. They have a combination of all these attributes. A track star is a gifted athlete, certainly...but that doesn't mean they match the total athletic package of an NFL star.

This is an award for the athlete of the year. I'm looking at Bryan Clay's list of wins on both Wikipedia and his own personal website and he has yet to win a single event this year. Why exactly do you think he's the athlete of the year?

Aaron Rodgers is having a career season. Going back to the start of 2011, he has lost a total of one game, won the Superbowl, was the Superbowl MVP, is the odds on favorite to be the league MVP this year, and is on pace to have one of the best statistical seasons in NFL history. There is absolutely no other choice for athlete of the year; no one has been as dominant in their sport in 2011 as Aaron Rodgers.

Brian Clay is a decathlete. He just doesn't run in a straight line. Sure you cherry picked one nfl guy that has comparable vert and 40 times. How's he in the shot put, the hurdles, or the javelin throw, pole vault, 100m dash, 400m, 1500m, etc.?

Yea - and you cherry picked the one track athlete that can compete with the NFL's best at their own game, don't be hypocritical. You said, and I quote, that "Dude makes nfl athletes look amateurish". I was simply pointing out the clear folly in this statement. Also, Calvin Johnson has the best broad jump ever recorded in the NFL, I already mentioned his strength - so I imagine he handles quite a few of those other events well enough to remain competative.

So - we have Calvin Johnson meeting your guy in many of the track events. Now tell me....how does Clay do in the NFL? How well can he catch the ball, steamroll a safety, run a crisp route? How fast does he run that 40 yard dash with NFL pads on? How well does he handle getting punched in the mouth at the start of every play, along with getting tackled at the end of many of them?

No one doubts that an Olympian is an amazing athlete - the absurd notion is to state that NFL stars are not amazing athletes as well.
