Packing up my life

In just over a week there will be movers at my place packing up our house. 1/2 will go to storage and 1/2 will go into a container to be shipped to Singapore.

On 7/31, my family and I will be on a plane, about to start another chapter of our lives. I've moved all over the USA since I came down from Canada. I always thought I'd do an ex-pat assignment, but I would have guessed it would have been in Europe (France or somewhere else where speaking French would be a big advantage).

Instead, my company is merging with a Singapore-based company and I'll be the CFO of the combined company as of the vote on August 4th. $1B+ in revenue, so we'll be pretty decent sized as a combined company.

It'll take at least a month for my computers to get to Singapore. I'm not 100% certain if I'll continue SETI1 at that point, I may switch over to BOINC or something else, or do nothing at all.

As an addendum, if you're in the SF Bay area (I live in Pleasanton) and you want older computers (Celeron and dual-Celeron), PM me. First one that wants all the extras I have can have them - they're going into storage and would be even more out of date.

I'm not willing to ship them, but I work in Fremont now and would either arrange a home pick-up at my place or something at work.

Michael

ps - thanks for the well-wishes

My sympathies to you on getting such a lousy posting I should know as I am a Singaporean

I got my BBA in York University in Toronto and then worked there for a while and I really love the Canadian way of life Coming back to Singapore after 8 years in Canada was a real bummer...but I have since adjusted

If you don't mind associating with an Ars , I can show you the best place to pick up real cheap IT stuff so that you can start building your home farm again

All the best on your move and hope you arrive on our little Island safely

I was just telling my GF that I wanted to plan a return visit to singapore next summer. I lived there for a 1 1/2 and want to go back.

Although I couldnt be more diametrically opposed to Michael philosophically I send my best wishes on a very big move and a great chance for success.

kenlow - I'm looking forward to living in Singapore. I have a 7 year-old daughter (and a 2 year old, but she's too young to understand) who should greatly benefit from the experience of living in Asia. If you're going to move to Asia, Singapore is about the easiest to adjust to. We found a place in Woodlands (close to the Singapore American School).

I've heard of the computer place you mentioned. In general, I've found USA prices to be the same or better than Singapore prices for electronics, maybe it is different for computer parts.

Michael

ps - on the subject of my older computer parts:

xComputerManiacx replied first then GunDog. They're both about 2 hours away (same city) and can swing by late next week. So xComputerManiacx gets the nod, but maybe he can share.

pps - Shuxclams is just bitter that my hockey team beat his again. <grin>

It looks like next Tuesday is when the computers all get packed up. Then they go into boxes and on a ship. They won't be back up and running for 4 weeks or so.

I have 19,150 WU. At the 20-25 a day I do, that means I'll end up with maybe 19,300 WU's. Not bad for someone who started with just one rig. Some help from the Cuppies and long enough time crunching and I think I did pretty well.

I'll probably pick some other project when I start up again as SETI 1 is basically over.

Landed in Singapore an hour ago.

Computers are now on a boat to here, will be back in production on some sort of team somewhere near Sept. 1.

Paul-Eric,

I always thought that I'd end up living in France because my French is good. Never dreamed that Singapore was a good possibility.

Good for you. Singapore is a wonderful but humid place to be in. Intersting blend of east and west culture there,

Glad you made it safe and sound. Best if luck on the new adventure!

Just make sure "some sort of team" is Team Anandtech!
