I'll try to give as much info as I have.

I'm getting this error on my sister-in-law's Dell 2400. It is a 2.2 ghz P4 with 256 mb of shared ram, I believe PC2700 DDR. Running XP Home, SP2.

She started getting this error about a month ago, and the first thing she tried was a sytem restore, but of course that didn't help. At this point, I am able to get it to boot into safe mode, but get the page fault error every time I try a regular startup.

Here is the stop error: 0x00000050 (0XF945FD00, 0X00000000, 0XF9428051, 0X00000000). WHen I looked up that error, it seemed to be pretty generic. It could be ram, virtual memory, antivirus programs, or lots of other things.

So far, I've tried disabling the page file and then setting it back to Windows managed after rebooting, reseating all the IDE cables, removing and re-adding the ram, and pulling the CMOS battery. I don't have an extra stick of ram to try. I also disabled everything from startup in msconfig. A virus scan and scandisk showed nothing.

I did run Memtest. When I ran the standard test, with the memory test set to BIOS-std, it didn't find any errors after 2 runs. When I switched to the BIOS-all scan, the error count got up to 5,206,371 before it got stuck halfway through the fourth test. That kind of has me leaning away from the ram.

The next thing I think I'll try is to try flashing the BIOS. Any other ideas?

Most likely it's the memory. BUT, I have also seen XP do this when the OS itself was blown out. Is it one or two modules of ram? If one, pull it and test with another, if Two, then try one at a time. Is there more to the error? Such as what type of stop it is?

Only 1 stick of ram and I don't have an extra stick to test it with. I'm going to see if they are willing to buy another stick to test it out.

The only info I have on the stop error is in the original post.

There's more to the error than that, the STOP screen should also tell you which driver caused the fault and if it's consistent it's normally that driver. If it's random it's probably hardware.

The only thing it says is "Stop 0x00000050 (0XF945FD00, 0X00000000, 0XF9428051, 0X00000000)". No driver information or anything.

I'm going back over there this evening so I'll look for driver information. I'm pretty sure there wasn't one listed, otherwise I would have known where to start.

Search using the right terms use "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" and "0x05" and you will get lots of hits.

Here are a couple.

It is likely RAM possibly a driver, possibly a bad page file (maybe bad hdd/file system error). Download memtest86+ and test the RAM, let it scan for several hours if it doesn't error out right away. Run a scandisk. Recreate your page file.

Thanks for the tips. I've already done all that though. I'm about desperate enough to try flashing the BIOS.
Occasionally it will get lucky and boot into windows, so if I can get it to go that far, I wll download updated drivers for everything.

Well, it's working now. I ended up doing a format and a reinstall of windows. This was after I conviced her to buy more memory, heh.

The bad part was, I told her I was going to reinstall, and she said ok. I asked her if she had everything backed up and wouldn't mind losing everything and she said sure. 2 minutes after I started the format, she said she wanted to get a couple of things off the computer. I just played dumb and waited until the reinstall was complete and acted surprised when everything was gone. Oh well, she was just happy to not have a $500 paperweight anymore.
