PAGE_FAULT!

When I woke up yesterday, I noticed that my fileserver had shutdown. Everytime I would turn it back on, it would power up but not post at all or give any beep codes. I noticed that the HDD led would stay lit so I tried unplugged all of the hdds in it but same deal. I tried resetting the bios but still no go. I then took out the IDE PCI card and it booted up fine. I plugged it back in and it booted up fine. I plugged all the hdds and it worked fine.

I woke up this morning and found it dead again. Meaning it was still turned on but the screen was blank. I rebooted and now it keeps bluescreening with the message PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA with something about ntfs.sys

It seems to do it randomly (sometimes right when it gets to the XP loading screen, other times when I try to log in.)

Any ideas on how to proceed? I left the machine running memtest before coming to work.

From my limited experience, I'd say the problem is due to unstable RAM settings.

The most critical Memtest86 tests seem to be Test#5 and Test#8 - particularly Test#8. Any memory settings that won't run multiple error-free passes of Test#8 will ultimately produce page-fault errors - even though they may seem stable running Prime95, SuperPi or other stress tests for extended periods. A typical example might be visiting a web site that invokes Macromedia Flash Player - session over - page-fault error.

To run repeated passes of specific Memtest86 tests:
- Start Memtest86.
- press key sequence: C 1 3 (test#) Return 0
- Example: Key sequence 'C 1 3 8 Return 0' would start multiple passes of Test#8.

Lemme give that a try when I get home tonight. I'll update this thread with the results. On a plus side, at least it isn't my main rig so I can still play WoW

many issues can cause a pagefault error. head over to http://support.microsoft.com/ and paste "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" into the search field to get a LONG list of issues that can cause a page fault error. dunkster's right... it could be a memory issue and since you stated "something about ntfs"..... it could be an issue with your file system. the next time it happens, record exactly what the page fault error is and head over to microsoft?s knowledge base to find the answer.
