Chilling up here in CT for a couple weeks at my aunt and uncle's house, and yesterday we noticed a rather large wasp nest in the tree in their front yard. Incidentally, they are right above the route to move the trash cans out front.

Well, today we busted out the binocs to get an idea of what kind of wasps they were.


Dun dun DUUUUUUUNNNNNN!

Bald faced Hornets. The nest is as big as a basketball. Like wayyyyy bigger than alternator size. Bulk bald faced hornets. Aunt is inclined to leave them be, I have my doubts.


How to proceed? Large thermonuclear device not viable, although we are considering the use of tactical warheads. Please advise.

Night attack. Go in with gasoline, drench the nest quickly and light it on fire, run back to house and watch from safety with binocs.

i saw a vid one time of some guys that had a huge nest attached to their backyard swing set. they made a gas bomb in a wagon, set it up with a series of pulleys and what not. dragged it under the nest and ignited it. the fireball was impressive (they remembered both fire and camera), and no more wasps.

Thos bastards are mean.....was renting a basement from a gal a couple years ago, big next formed above the garage so one morning before she left for work she thought it would be smart to just spray the nest down with a hose...and not tell me

i'm walking out of the garage talking on the phone to my then GF now Wife when all of a sudden some rams the back of my head then a shooting pain...then another and another and yeah i run like a banshee....there had to be 100+ wasps swamring around my car...

needless to say I was PISSED at my landlord.

We have two cans of the wasp spray, already zapped a small paper wasp nest in the backyard. Might plan a night assault on this one. I may need some bourbon to juice up the courage. Just watched a youtube video of someone throwing a rock at a BF hornet nest, I now have the heeby jeebies. I'll probably scream like a little girl anytime so much as a house fly buzzes by my head. Can they smell fear??

Yes. A hornet always knows to go after the person most scared of them, which is typically me.

Night is good. Do wasps have only one entrance? If not, scope out any entrances to the nest and be sure you and any helpers can hit them all while spraying. Make sure your spray has the range to reach the nest without trouble.


Last time I took out a nest, it was on a roof in one of the attic vents. I climbed up there and started spraying. The wasps started boiling out of the nest and I was able to keep them at bay because they were all hit by deadly poison as they came out. Then I noticed my can of spray was getting noticeably light. It dawned on me that it would not be quick to get to and down the ladder and that dying from a plummet to the ground would be just as bad as death by stinging. Terror overcame me as I prayed the poison would outlast the wasp supply.






In short, also have a clear and quick escape route planned out.

As I recall, the right can of bug spray will do the job. I saw a utilities guy take out a hornets nest on the electrical meter. It shot a steady stream of insecticide onto the nest and killed them quick without much drama.

YMMV. Be careful, hornets can sting multiple times and are aggressive!

They're not honeybees? Ok, good.
Bald-faced hornets? Destroy. They are not friendly things.

I've had good experiences with Ortho's hornet-killing products. Get a can of the long-range stuff, target the entrance to the nest, fire away, and run.
