Is Painkiller worth getting? Or should I look into a more modern games like Doom 3?
If so which version of Painkiller is the best. I see listed on Ebay the Black and Gold versions. I enjoyed the Serious Sam games more than the Half Life games.....never did get into the storyline of Half Life at all. And Serious Sam reminded me of the old days of Doom.
I see where they rate the Black as Teen and Gold as a mature audience any diff?

Lol. I know both are a little aged but from what I understand doom 3 has more advanced graphics. I just need something fun to tide me over until Stalker 2 clear sky arrives.

Btw I'm still enjoying Freespace 2 even though it was put out in 1999. With the new updates it is almost like playing a new game. If only they would advance the AI in the game.

Painkiller was released the same year as HL2 and Doom3, right? As I recall, some people considered it one of the best games of the year, right up there with Doom 3, HL2 and FarCry. I was more interested in it than Doom 3, which seems to me to be just a bunch of darkness crawling, scary monster shooting goodness.

If you enjoyed the fast action and multitude of enemies in the Serious Sam games, then you'll love Painkiller.

Painkiller was way better than Doom 3, IMO. It does play a lot like a darker version of Serious Sam. I'm not sure what the differences between the Black and Gold versions are though. I know they both include the original game + the expansion, but I think the Black edition has bonus making-of features and is printed on DVD, whereas Gold is printed on CD without the bonus stuff. I'm not sure why they would have different ratings when they should be the same content.

Also, if you do pick up Painkiller and enjoy it, I've been told by friends that the new Overdose game isn't worth picking up. Apparently it was done by some studio other than Dreamweaver and just isn't as good.

Doom 3 was overhyped rubbish. Painkiller was pretty decent...I'd go for that.

Painkiller and Battle out of Hell (expansion) were good (although I still prefer the original over the expansion). And after trying Overdose (prequel to Painkiller recently released) all I could do was to dislike it.

Doom 3 was a HUGE letdown. Painkiller (the original I haven't played the sequel yet) is a game that's all about kicking ass like in the days of Doom and Quake.

i liked PK/BOoH ... there is a brand new expansion - Overdose - out this last November, i think

D/L the Overdose Demo ... see for yourself if you like it ... there are also two older demos also ... there are weapons, secret places [mindboggylingly difficult to reach] and unlockable levels ... a little depth beside the twitch shooting.
--all three expansions play the same with Overdose having slightly newer graphics

Okay thanks.... I'll probably go with the Painkiller black edition as soon as I get my new computer built. And maybe by that time Stalker 2 will be out as well. I might try the new Nostromo 52 TE controller on this game.

Overdose is a stand-alone game
... but not very different than an expansion - kinda short, i think ... as to the 'series' it is actually a "prequel" to the first one.

Painkiller was fun. It's pretty oldschool in a Quake/Doom kind of way - i.e. no clips, just 200 bullets in your gun. The level design is pretty good, and the physics and crazy guns make everything enjoyable. The challenges for unlocking tarot cards (powerups) tend to be fun rather than frustrating. The story is garbage, and you might as well skip the cut scenes, but that's ok, since the rest makes up for it (and I'm usually a story person).

Tried the Overdose demo and hated it. There wasn't much new or interesting, but the dealbreaker for me was the annoying comments that the player character makes. There didn't seem to be any way to turn them off, and there was no way I would be able to play through more than one level with that going on.

If you liked Serious Sam then you'll probably like Painkiller. Also Jericho might be a title you?ll like.

Painkiller Gold is $10 (Steam) well spent. I just wish it had a cooperative mode.

Agree 100% w/ 450R. Best $10 I spent in a while. I finished it the other week on Trauma mode (it wasn't much harder than Nightmare, IMO). Runs fantastic on slightly older hardware as well (1600x1200 all settings maxed + AA on a 7800GTX 512MB - silky smooth; 16x12 maxed no AA on a 6800GT - just a bit choppy w/ lots of enemies.)

You should enjoy Painkiller - If it's anything like the latest Painkiller:

You enter an area [usually rectangular in shape]
You kill a bunch of mobs
Once the mobs are dead, a door will open
Rinse and repeat

I personally found it too boring...

Run and gun games can be fun if the weapons are great and varied and the sense of escape and danger are there.

What I liked about Serious Sam 1 was the necessity to stay alive with all the different creatures such as Buffalo coming at you from all directions....and then whipping out the Tommy gun to take them out. Also enjoyed the many Egyptian temples and artwork that went into it. If these types of games used some non scripted environments and different enemy AI the re playability would be there also.

Another earlier run and gun game I enjoyed was Aliens Vs. Predator-the marine single player missions were frightening at times. The Atmosphere was scarier than the second later Aliens vs. Predator 2 game......from the Monolith people...in my opinion.

You'll enjoy Painkiller. It's still one of my favourite games. You will find yourself running backwards alot instead of forward because of the relentless onslaught of enemies. A good time waster, IMHO.
