In the realm of prescription pain killers, which do you prefer, percocet or hydrocodone? Why?

I'm taking hydrocodone for my back and it seems to do the trick, however, my sister in law had a kidney stone which they had to blast out and she had a catheter in as well. She is taking percocet for her pain and swears by it.

Just curious which is "better" or why one is prescribed over the other.
Looks like percocet is oxycodone vs hydrocodone for the other.

There wasn't much of a difference between Percocet or Vicodin for me. I liked morphine the best (never had Dilaudid though).

Fentanyl, Duladid. You won't be feeling shit. And super happy feel good to boot.

Normally some will work better than others for each person.

On paper, oxycodone is slightly 'stronger' than hydrocodone at the same dosage.

In reality, it is highly subjective and everyone is a little bit different.

Myself, I preferred IV morphine but these days I avoid any narcotic painkillers, if I can.

My favorite painkiller is ibuprofen. It's OTC, but, the 600 and 800mg tablets in the US are sold only with prescription. (silly really since it's exactly the same as taking 3 or 4 of the 200mg tabs.)

It doesn't diminish ones' capacity (can still think clearly and do whatever one wants to do, just with less pain!)

You can drink while on ibuprofen without killing your liver.

The effective dose for ibuprofen is 800 mg. That was the typical prescription before it went OTC. 800 or 1200 mg.

So how did they get it to be OTC? Cut the recommended dose in half to 400. You really should take 800 if you take it.

I don't think I've ever taken anything stronger than extra strength Advil.

Yea, 800 works better but it's a big dosage, one could try 400 first and see if it does the trick, thing about NSAID type of meds is they are notoriously rough on the stomach, I'd recommend taking your dose after a meal. As to OP's question, percocet's narcotic is oxycodone which is slightly stronger than hydrocodone in a Vicoden or Loritab. Thing is though if you ask a doctor for a specific type of narcotic that might set off an alarm with him/her into maybe your an addict and then you might wind up with something with no narcotic at all or Ultram which is very weak..

I've been prescribed/taken nearly every pain killer on the market at one time or another. Morphine is definitely my favorite of the bunch...but perhaps not the most effective at blocking pain. IIRC, Fentanyl is rated as the #1 pain killer.

I still have bottles and bottles and bottles of Oxycontin, Percodan/Percocet, and hydrocodone in various formulations...oh yeah...and tramadol...for me, about like taking Tylenol. (plus some Valium...but you can't have that stuff...it's MINE!)

In reality, I don't take anything stronger than Excedrin. I also take ibuprofen and naproxen as needed for body aches and pains...but Excedrin is my usual "go to" for headaches.

In MY experience, the opioids don't really stop pain...they just make you so stupid you don't care that it hurts...

400 usually works for me so 'should' is subjective. No need to overmedicate.

This is important for me. I need to be able to function at work while not feeling pain or anything. I find hydrocodone is like speed to me. I get more done, feel more productive, want to do more, and have no pain over ibuprofen.

yea, when I have had hydrocodone it knocked the pain out well, but, ruined my concentration and essentially I slept a lot.

I haven't been on any "stronger" pain killers, but, normally, ibuprofen does the trick if I do something stupid like lift a snowmobile too high without help and pull something in my back. (I learned my lesson!)

Almost exactly what happened to me years ago. I picked up a jetski trailer and something popped in my back. Now, from time to time, I get a very bad pain and my leg goes numb. Gradually it will go away for a few weeks to a year and then eventually come back. A couple weeks ago I was laid up in bed for a day as I could barely move.

Jack Daniels.

Ultram is a good non-narcotic painkiller. Opiods don't do much for me.. make me loopy but don't diminish any pain.

Lortabs have acetaminophen and that always concerns me if I have to take them for extended periods.

Aleve - crushed & snorted

Since Aleve is an NSAID (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) similar to Advil (ibuprofen) but longer acting, there is no reason whatsoever to crush and snort it., Do you crush and snort antibiotics when you them then too?.

For me, hydrocodone (Lortab/Vicodin) is more effective than oxycodone (Percocet). And so is Tylenol 3 (codeine); Percocets don't really do much, I might as well take OTC whatever.

But as for my favorite painkiller? That would have to be Vioxx, may it rest in peace.
That stuff was totally awesome. Sprained ankle, torn ligament? Pop a 50mg Vioxx and keep on truckin', no sedation, no woozy-ness, the pain and inflammation would just flat out go away. If it were still on the market, I would probably still take it anyway.

For joint pain, what do people here prefer, oral OTC meds already mentioned or topical pain creams?
