Saw a paintball gun and mask kit for about $95 at my local walmart yesterday (in Southern California). Has anyone seen it?

I know JT makes decent masks, but I didn't check out the brand of gun. I'm a paintball newb so I don't know much about the gear and guns. Is this a good kit for newbs? Surely it's better than the rentals that provided. Sorry if this isn't a hot deal.

If this is the one your talking about Paintball marker Brass Eagle is a beginer brand gun kinda like how Veraflex were the beginer brand skateboards WalMart always used to sell back in the day. if you do get it keep the mask but sell the mask on E-Bay.

It's probably a Brass Eagle gun. The BE was the first gun that I, and all of my friends, bought to throw paint. It's not particularly powerful...or accurate...and it has a tendency to break paintballs in the barrel (a total pain in the @ss), however, it's cheap. With the money you save buying this c ombo, you can buy yourself a pair of 20oz CO2 tanks that will make your paintball experience significantly more enjoyable. Go for it. You'll be ready to upgrade in a year anyway no matter what you buy, and the mask, hopper and tanks will stay with you for a long time.

like they said, it's probably brass eagle since they now own jt.. the mask should be alright.. and if you're ever gonna take this game/sport seriously, you're going to want another gun, in which case, you may as well get a good one and get used to keeping it in good shape, and getting accustomed to it... a good site is www.pbreviews.com ... you can get a lot of good information there

brass eagle is worse than field rentals, do NOT waste your time with it.... thats my opinion.

if you want more opinions on paintball gear than go to www.paintballreview.com that should be the site to read up on a few things. spyders and tippmans i personally think are great beginner guns.

Get a 98 custom with all the stuff you need for about 150... never have to upgrade past barrel.

I have a 98c with teardrop barrel AND empire electric hopper because I shoot way too fast.

Be careful if you buy a paitnball gun. Soon the sport will consume you and the next thing you know you'll have thousands of dollars worth of gear. But if you get good then you get stuff at cost or for free(oh how I love sponsors )

Brass Eagle aren't very good guns. Also, you want to spend money on a good mask cause otherwise it will fog up on you and I can't tell you how horrible that is while getting shot at. For a very very reliable "cheap" semiautomatic gun you can't beat the tippman 98. A good entry level electric marker is the Impulse. They use it at a lot of the rental places since it's very reliable and durable. Regardless of what you buy you're gonna get addicted and will want to drop more money on something better after your first time.

What would you recommend for a intermediate (> n00b) player who wants good accuracy (don't care about ROF, I = sniper )

There is no real sniping in paintball. The closest thing is the phantom or fantom by Jt industries i think it is. Friend built one 2 yrs ago, had a rifle barrel maker build his barrell of of a steel blank. 28 inch 5r rifling BOOTS OBERMEYER PAINTBALL BARREL.. It shot a 6 inch group at 90 yards.

Being a "sniper" in paintball doesn't really work. If you're playing woodsball and stuff you can sneak around in the bushes, but there's no point in putting a scope on a paintball gun like I've seen some people do.
Tippmanns are great first markers. My first was a Tippmann. I still have it actually for a backup and I can always count on it running. They are easy to break down and clean a no brainer to operator. All the different variants of spyders have gotten pretty good over the years too. They can be a little bit more finicky though. I'd say a Tippmann though, they are rock solid and have plenty of aftermarket parts you can get.

But was the FPS out of the barrel?

All in all a model98 custom is really a good beginner gun stock and can grow with the player well if you spend some money on it. They arent flashy, but they are tough as nails. Plus you can't beat Tippmann's customer service. I would highly suggest looking for a deal on a Model 98 if you are looking to get into paintball seriously for the first time. But I would play for a while with a rental to make sure you are going to stay in it.

A few things about the Flatline barrels for Tippmann:

1: You want to make sure they are lined up right otherwise your shots will go way off. This is much more of an issue with the Model 98's flatline than the one for the A-5 though.

2: Good paint is just about a requisite for any kind of accuracy with the flatline. You are already trading a bit of accuracy for the extended range so every little bit helps. Also better paint breaks less in any barrel, and if you break a ball your accuracy really goes down the tubes with the flatline (difficult to clean on the field).

3: The Flatline for the A-5 will loose accuracy if you dont treat it right... too involved to get into here.

"dont care about ROF and want a TAD bit of extra range? Go with the flatline barrel.... "
4: I have never broken paint when rapid firing with my flatline on my A-5, least not because of the barrel itself.

Check out the A-5 Owners Group or Tippmann Forum if you have any questions on Tippmann's in general. The A5OG guys are particularly helpful with questions, even with "noobs".

There was this guy I used to play with who would snipe using a single shot pump gun. It was really accurate. (Never shot it but got shot by it a bunch of times) This was playing on a hyper ball course so not sure how it would work in woods.

Holy crap!!! I never thought I would run into fellow paintballers on here!

Sniping in paintball is not sniping in its traditional sense. It focuses more on the stealth aspect of sniping rather than the long range aspect. I used to shoot a Phantom pump(It was purple... Muhahaha (Made by CCI)). It was quite accurate, but no moreso than any other marker with a proper paint-barrel match. The really nice part about it was how quiet and light it was. I could maneuver it very freely and shoot without being located (by sound). I never considered myself a sniper, but I was quite stealthy. People that believe that there are snipers in the sport of paintball would have considered me a sniper, I guess...

I started playing pump after about 4 years of playing semi. I decided to make the switch to test how good I really was, to hone my skills, and to use less paint. After about a year and a half of playing with the pump, I sold the Phantom, and bought a B2K4 with PDS... I am now a force to be reckoned with. Hehe... But yeah. I'd suggest that anyone who has never played pump should try it. Good stuff...

As for ANY marker made by Brass Eagle or any of its counterparts (JT/VL), you should stay away from them... If you are a tweaker and are looking for a good project gun, I would suggest a BE Rainmaker(long since discontinued, but available if you look hard enough), but other than that, I don't suggest anything by Brass Eagle. For low end markers, go with a Spyder.

I use a Palmer's Blazer. They simiply make the best semi marker. Every marker is hand crafted. I am consider getting a Phantom as well because I have never use a pump gun before. Everyone is telling it's the best pump available.

I concur and also agree that you should avoid brass eagle. I've seen several people at the field switch to the rental guns which were far superior to the brass eagles. Good paint is also a must - a lot of people I've played with say they won't use BE paint - but I've never observed someone actually using it, so I'm not 100% certain it's crap.
