Paintball rules.... some stupid ones...

Ive played paintball a few times in my life. Nothing formal, just screwing around with friends etc...

Yesterday we (my wife, her family and family friends) all went out paintballing at a local place. A few of the people we went with were a bit more experienced, so they taught us the ropes of how things worked. There were a good ~30 other people there, so we played mixed games.

After I got the hang of the game, I become increasingly frustrated. I know it is a big 'no-no' to call people cheaters, especially good players, but I couldn't help but think these guys were cheating. I was swearing up and down (in my head) I was hitting people, but I never got anyone out. Then I started talking to some people and they were mentioning that my balls weren't breaking on them. I had actually left a number of whelts on people, but they stayed in the game. Why? Well, apparently if the ball doesn't break, you aren't out. Seriously? That's some bullshit, IMO. If I get hit, I have a fucking whelt and I definitely felt the ball hit me, I should be out.

Instead, I had a guy pull this number on me. He was the best player on the opposing team. I had him locked down and pegged him. He said to me "ya, you hit me 3 or 4 times. I looked down though and one of teh balls had rolled off my neck and didn't break. I didn't see any paint" He stayed in teh game of course and got me out a few minutes later.

That's one of the stupidest fucking things I've ever heard. Basically, if I get hit, I am supposed to check for paint. If I don't see it (not because it isn't there... ) I am allowed to stay in? Whatever.

Cliffs: If the ball doesn't break you're fucked.

Here's my question. What kind of paintballs are you using that they don't break on contact but they hit hard enough to leave a welt? That's kindof messed up.

No clue, I didn't buy them. My wifes father bought ~6000 balls. To take it a step further though. How do I even know they weren't breaking? Sure, some might not have, but to say that you got hit 3-4 times and no balls broke seems silly to me. They probably broke, he probably just didn't notice the paint. That's not the point though. The paint is there for a ref to call you out, if he see's it. But if you KNOW you got it, why not leave the game?

It makes sense though - how would ump know the ball hit somebody if it doesn't break? Otherwise, you're just at the mercy of another person's honestly. And I've played a few times and I've never seen paintballs not break - you probably had a defective batch.

IMO, the more BS rule is that the gun is part of the body, if it gets hit you're out.

It's always like that BUT I agree that it should count as an "out". That said, get better paintballs.

I understand where you are coming from, but I had done some reading before going out and I thought the honesty system was a big part of paintball. After all we had about 16 people on the field at one time with 1 ref on the side. There was no way he was seeing half of the people getting hit, if that. It was all 'honesty' system, breaking balls or not.

Played for about 3 years. From my experience it's one of the following:

1) people were wearing thick/baggy clothes
2) you got some bad paintballs
3) people were wiping

If it's as bad as you said, it might be a combination of all three.

If the ball doesn't break then you're not out. simple rule.that's why competitive players will overshoot guys. usually the cheaper paintballs won't break all the time. Or if they haven't been stored properly. Or if it's too cold.

Dude yesterday when I was playing, this guy was wearing this special nylon-like material shirt that the paintballs doesn't break on him. He did admit later that I got him but the balls just ricocheted off him.

no sh!t, it's called paintball, not airsoft.

and yes, wearing baggy clothes to absorb some of the blow is an old trick.

there are winter and summer paintballs. summer paintballs don't break well in the cold. or so i'm told.

Gee, if you shoot someone with your paintball marker & it leaves no mark, I wonder why they wouldn't be out? Does the word "marker" give anything away?

I've been a couple of times now, and witnessed the same thing. Then again I had a rental and field paint. It wasn't all that uncommon to get hit and not have it break. I remember the last time I went there were a good 3 or 4 times I got drilled but it didn't break so I stayed in. This was over the entire course of a day though, not one game like you're mentioning.

In all honesty, getting hit when it doesn't break hurts like a bitch! I took one off the dome that didn't break, that put me down like a champ, luckily my team put down a bit of coverfire before they could finish me off. Technically I believe they should have been putting down the cover fire BEFORE I run out in the open... oops

Anyways, it sucks, it happens. That's part of the game. Nothing is perfect, especially not paintball. And lets not even get into how inaccurate the guns are ...

Yeah it's dumb. It's just way too easy to cheat in paintball, especially outdoor paintball. Always some punk kids with their $600 markers that mommy bought them, fully decked out in all sorts of gear, wiping. Only way to avoid it is to play with friends, or play like the jerks do and don't stop shooting until they put their hands up, regardless of how many times you've been hit.. I've even seen ppl claim that the splatter was from a previous game and they forgot to clean it off. PB is full of BS like that.

That is a basic paintball rule. If you want to play hit = out no matter what then play airsoft.

You should be allowed to call a ref over to check them for paint. I usually play big games where theres tons of refs around though, so its not always easy.

paint not breaking is a common problem in cold weather paintball. normally you can't see if the paint breaks and you just call yourself out, but sometimes you don't feel it and it causes paint and doesn't cause paint. If you didn't feel it and someone says they hit you, just look at your clothes and say, "where's the evidence?"
