I have decided I want my case to be the same color as my car (Anthracite mettalic). I have read online that I can get spray paint cans in the exact color of my car using the paint code. It seems pretty simple to do in theory. Just completely dissasembled the case, prime and then apply a few layers of base coat, then clearcoat. then sand, buff and wax.

But has anyone ever tried this one their own and was satisfied with the results?

would a body shop even waste their time painting someone's case?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

I've never done this personally, but a good friend of mine did this with automotive spraypaint and the results were fabulous. He painted a PC that 1950's puke pastel green you see on classic cars of that era. It turned out really nice, but I know he put a lot of work into it. A few coats of primer, several coats of paint with several coats of clearcoat over the top, sanded and hand polished between coats. If you're willing to put in the effort, it can really look as shiny and nice as the hood of a new car.

I got my friends hornet powder coated candy-apple red. It is so cool. I'm thinking of doing it after I'm finished modding my lian-li.

It is certainly possible - I did it using spray cans I bought from an auto shop.

Unfortunately, I didn't realise how much effort you have to put into preparation to get it to look good.

I only prepared the top of the case beautifully - sanded with 4 grades of wet&dry paper, so that the steel was mirror shiny. The rest of the case I just sanded until most of the old beige paint had come off.

I put on 2 coats of primer, 6 or 7 coats of metallic midnight blue and 3 or 4 coats of clear laquer - polishing between the last 2 laquer coats with a paint colour restorer (a very mild abrasive polish).

Where I'd prepared the metal to a mirror like shine, the finish was amazing - silky smooth, and super shiny exactly like a car just from the dealer.
The rest looked rough with a slightly matte finish without the shine that normal metallic paints give.

Cliff's notes:
Need to sand and polish case down to the metal so you get a mirror finish
Need lots and lots of paint - I think I needed 2 cans of primer, 4 or 5 cans of paint and 2 of laquer.
