MaskedAvenger, how is your Tagan PS doing?
By any chance did it have the "VOIDED IF REMOVED" piece of tape on the power supply cut?

My CPUs are sitting at the UPS depot waiting for me to pick them up. I'll take pics later and post'em here.

Unfortunately, I haven't got a dual Xeon board to put them in. Don't have my IWTs yet either.

So...I'm in holding pattern. At least I've got the CPUs! I continue to read great things about them.

I have to agree with MichaelD on this one. It's definitely encouraging to hear continuing stories of other people's overclocks with these procs. I'm still sitting on the fence about getting these Xeons. They sure are tempting.

I don't know if you didn't read the thread or what but we have been talking about way more than just the xeon proc's (mobo's, hsf combo's etc)

Hey, I got my Xeons today and took some pics.

They are definitely a matched pair, as the serial #'s are VERY close.

Xeon #1

Xeon #2

They do appear to be new...no traces of thermal paste on them and they don't feel sticky or anything.

Pic of both Xeons.

divide_by_zero: I just ordered it and don't have it yet. I don't even have my cpu's yet, so it'll be a while before I can check out the Tagan.

if the IWT are loud, how can i change the fan?

I mike and most others get them from eBay. Yes the factory fans are supposed to be loud, I don;t know first hand as I don;t have them yet. But go to 2cpu.com forums section and everthing is listed there on how to switch fans.

all the complaining about the IWT I was expecting jet engines. Once the BIOS comes up the fans quiet right down. Although I had a catalyst 5000 switch in my livingroom for about a year so my definition of loud is probaly not mot peoples.

Heh, well, I can tell you this for fact.

I don't have an appropriate motherboard yet; but I DO Have a 6-15V, 25-amp bench power supply than I use for testing that things like fans, LEDs, car audio amps, work.

Using my VOM, I set the PS to exactly 12.02 volts (as close as I could get to 12.0000v) and touched the leads to the fan leads.

The sound that followed could best be described as "a dentist drill on low speed." These little 60mm, Sanyo-Denki fans that come with the IWTs are LOUD. They whine...that's the main issue. Sure, you hear the "air" moving...but they are spinning so fast that they whine, and it's fairly loud, IMO.

I work with servers all day, in rooms that are so loud (mostly due to the CRAC units) that you really dont' even hear the 1U and 2U boxes screaming away w/their 6-10 fans each selves.

But in my room at home where all my boxes have Panaflo L1A's or one/two other low speed 80mm fans...these things just SCREAM.

Put your hand in front of them and you can't help but say "Dayum...these little fckers push some serious air!!!"

It makes me wonder as to the efficiency of the HS that comes w/the IWTs'. I mean....if the HS was GOOD at dissapating heat, would you really need a high speed fan?

I have several Thermalright SLK800/900's; all copper, they do a tremendous job with low-speed fans.

Anyway...sorry for the book.

I bought 2 intel HSF's. Included in the box is a yellow piece of paper saying:

Warning!
The fan that ships with this processor requires a constant 12v supply. Some boards
designed for use with this processor may have implemented a fan speed control
that is not compatible with this fan....

IMPORTANT: Failure to supply a constant 12V to the processor fan will cause the processor to
overheat or shutdown.

Seems to me that the fans are thermostatically controlled, and want a constant 12v.
Seems like a good idea to disable the Asus "Q-Fan Technology" in the bios.

I got the same warning. I can tell you though that even running at 2.5Ghz these pupies are cool to the touch using the IWT and Q-FAN I idle around 90 degrees and at full load goto 109 degrees. I tryed to run these with no fan as supposedly intel calls the IWT a passive heatsink. I think the BIOS underclocked though since i could watch it draw each letter on the bios screen. so I plugged it back in. Anyone who hasn't got in on this should I got these procs, 2 IWT's ,a power supply and the asus pc-dl all for under 400$ including shipping.

I got a cheap PSU from newegg. http://www.newegg.com/app/view...=17-101-510&depa=0 only reason I got it was that it said "MB Connector: 24 pins + 8 pins EPS12V (+4 Pin )" but it does not have the 8 pin 12v connector just the normal 4pin. It does have the 24pin vs normal 20 and did run this board fine. I have switched back to my thermaltake 430watt with no adaptors at all. Overall I think a good high quality ATX PSU should be ok so I am trying that for now.

divide_by_zero: My Tagan power supply was delivered today, and it does have a piece of tape over the case cover that says "Warranty void if removed".

Still waiting on the xeons, some OCZ Enhanced Latency ram and my new Antec Super Lan boy case to hold everything together!

w0ss, have u tried overclocking with atx power supply? I have a 550 fortron atx power supply lying around, so I hate to spend another $80 for a SSI power supply.

Anyone else is using atx power supply without problems?

I am running at 165X15 with ATX power supply. I tryed multiple ones and I still get the same overclock no more no less. You should be fine but as always it is not an officially supported configuration.
Thanks,
Will

FYI, I'll be purchasing a set of these tonight.

They are all-copper, skivved fin design, not "fins hammered into slots" like the stock IWTs AND they are rated to 3.2GHz as opposed the 2.8GHz that most stock IWTs on Ebay (where I got mine) are rated at. Much better HSF unit!!!

Oh, and the fan is 70mm and has a standard mounting scheme; i.e. fan bolts straight to HS. This makes it MUCH easier to use a 80mm-->70mm adapter than on the IWT.

On the IWT, the fan clips into a bracket, bracket clips onto wind tunnel part. You would need to drill four holes in the adapter to get it to clip to the bracket from the IWT. No need to do that w/these units.

I just wanted to say that I (and my credit card) hate you guys.

I managed to put off this deal for a long time, hoping it'd go away. Someone was interested in my 2.4c@3.0 + Abit IC7-G, so I went ahead and ordered a pair of Xeons, a PC-DL, and a pair of factory 3.2 Xeon coolers (Supposedly the improved design).

Crossing my fingers that the voltmod will put me in the 2.8-3 GHz range.

Awesome!!! You're worlds ahead of me as I don't have a mobo yet.

BTW, where'd you find those Intel 3.2GHz coolers? I looked and came up empty.

OMG that is cheap. I think I will have to sell the ones I just got TODAY!!!

I see the base is copper, and the fins are Alum. I guess that is better then the older style I have, alum. base and some copper fins.
