Those bits don't say anything about a new party. Palin can drive a conservative "movement" as (stated) without becoming a party. MoveOn and Soros took over the Dems from the outside in that way.

Good point, Barry. Do you think that is what it will be? Some sort of Glenn Beck-ish "Don't Tread on Me" type group? Tea Party movement? Or a bona fide new party?

I don't know what she is thinking aside from fact she wanted out of Alaska because of investigations and endless media assaults. I know she had frustrations with McCain people and GOP as well. I'm sure she feels stuck between a rock and a hard place.

I think she would be more effective as "civilian" taking up the point on conservative issues where the rubber meets the road. I didn't want her for VP and I don't want her for prezzer - however she is extremely popular with a lot of people. She could raise a lot of money and bring pressure to the GOP

The GOP has been adrift from its base and doesn't respond to it's base as much as it responds to media, special interests etc. They really need to be pushed from the outside like Dems were. Even Dems tell you about the money and power MoveOn holds over the dems. The GOP needs something like that. Plain could become a part of media too. She can do more outside the party than in it right now.

Frankly I think the Republican Party would be better without her type of "conservatism" being included in it.

Is that really fair to Anita Bryant, who was really nuts only on one issue, and had the excuse that her views were in a low worse era on that issue, like black rights in 1900?

Great strategy, further cannibalize the GOP and hand over power to the left on a silver platter.

Actually it might be a good thing for the country even if it splits the GOP.

And there can be a Palin led religious right and GWB wingnut party. That will only win a very few elective offices.

A party composed of the rational part of the GOP that get clobbered even if they sound refreshingly credible.

And democrats who are all over the political spectrum but will by in large all win because the GOP is split.

Short term, the democrats would win by a landslide.

But at least it would teach the religious right and GWB type wingnuts that they can't go it alone and expect to win any elective offices. As it is, the religious right and GWB wingnuts are at best 1/3 of the GOP, yet they act as if they were the majority of the GOP and have veto power over the rest of the GOP.

First post we've agreed on? Couldn't happen to a nicer party.

But could happen to the Democrats, too, corporatists versus progressives.

Not at all. It will mean the left can also safely split into progressives and traditionalists and the libertarians can take their rightful place as rulers of the world.

I wouldn't be so sure of your conclusions; if the Republican Party were cut down to a rational center, you might see a significant defection of Democrats, and a larger number of Independents voting "R"...

BUAHHAHahaha!!!!!! Maybe her platform will include guaranteeing a dinosaur in every garage.

I know there are some idiots out there who would vote for her, but she's a brainless twit on a steep downhill dive. Seriously, no one with half a brain can take her seriously.

I would consider voting republican if all the wingnuts were purged and the tradition of "Rockefeller Republicans" came back*

*this will never happen.

The GOP will eventually split into the Conservative Christians and the Libertarians. Dems will split into the middle-of-the-road and the left-wingers. Green party will stay in the shadows will Ralph Nader crying with Ron Paul.

Err, Ron Paul is basically the definition of a libertarian.

And there are plenty of Republicans who aren't 'conservative' (radical is probably a better word) Christians, but I wouldn't say they are libertarians.

Yup, I can tell she's on a downward dive because of all the threads about her and all the passion she generates. She knows how to skin a lot more than moose. She's already put a ring in most of the lib's noses. Say Palin and watch um freak.

If the GOP is stupid enough to do that no way in hell Dems would split off anything.

I might vote Republican if they gave up every social conservative stance they currently catered towards and stuck solely to fiscal conservativism. As it stands, it's the conservative stance on social issues (abortion, gay rights, drugs, censorship) more than anything that turns me off to the Republican party. If Sarah Palin can create a new party to suck all the xenophobes and bigots out of the Republican party, they would be considerably better off for it.

Polls show most Americans to be in line with "conservative" GOP attitudes. They are overwhelmingly against illegal immigration, homosexual marriage, abortion on demand etc. The GOP is not split per se. The party leaders have been split from the base.

The 'conservative' GOP attitude on abortion is to ban it. A ban on abortion is overwhelmingly opposed by Americans in poll after poll after poll.
