I am REALLY enjoying this. It's almost like letterman baited her knowing she will set him up for a million jokes.

http://politicalticker.blogs.c...ettermans-weak-excuse/

It's so freaking obvious letterman was referencing her 18 year old daughter. To even think that he was referencing the 14 year old getting knocked up is ludicrous.

Letterman will tear her apart, and so far, he's done a good job tearing up her BFF Todd as well, which I find HILARIOUS.

I can't wait to see what excuses she brings up tonight on w/ wolf blitzer for over-reacting to the whole situation.

Palin just needs to sit back, and laugh a bit about how f'ed up life is sometimes.

The only daughter at the game was her 14 year old. Letterman is lying thru his teeth.

letterman has become a dumbass... he's now trying to cover up for his stupidity... he probably wrote the joke himself, since he's not throwing the writer under the bus...

he eff'ed up because he assumed the daughter or forgot the daugther was the 14 year old one.

A knocked up joke referencing the palin daughter would ultimately have to reference the one who was actually knocked up, to make any sense. So only an idiot would think he actually meant the 14 year old.

The joke makes no sense to anyone else other then Bristol.

ahhh, of course... what he says in the context of what he referenced isn't relevant, it's what you think he meant that matters...

I think you are right in that he wrote the joke himself, if it was a writer I bet he would have sacrificed him/her by now. But you never know, they may be real close w/ some of their writers. Either way, you could argue he is doing this solely for ratings as well. He may have intentionally f'ed his joke

ahhh... so now this can come full circle... you agree that letterman is the kind of scumbag who would shoot one of his writers when he was the one who chose to use the joke... and you agree that he's the kind of scumbag that will 'joke' about someone raping a 14 year old for his own political and/or personal gain...

welcome to the dark side...

Yeah - it was definitely aimed at the 'Ambassador of Abstinence' BUT the direct target was Alex Rodriguez.

Letterman has been on Alex Rodriguez for nearly a year - it's his standard on-going joke - since the tabloids went nuts about him and Madonna.

Palin needs to stop the knee-jerking - she looked like an idiot in search of a clue on the Today Show. Letterman does not 'do the news'.

If Letterman can take on Oprah he'll make generous hay with this silliness.

Regardless, he's an unmitigated asshole for such a comment.

This is just a ploy by Palin's camp to garner more publicity. In a sense she's exploiting her own daughter.

IMO nobody with any common sense would take this joke as referring to a 14-year-old - that stand is as absurd as Palin's claimed concern about her daughter's safety in Letterman's presence (not to mention her supposed fear that Letterman has discriminated against flight attendants by implying that she looks like a slutty stewardess). Sarah Palin is an imbecile and all she's doing is continuing to feed Letterman ratings.

The fact that Palin even continues to have a national political presence is indicative of our country's descent into abject idiocy. Coming in 2028: GOP presidential nominee Carrie Prejean . . .

By the way, I don't agree that there's any particular reason to think Dave wrote this joke himself - I would never expect him to sacrifice a writer to defend himself. His "apology" for the joke made it clear that he simply doesn't think he did anything wrong. I tend to agree.

Letterman apologized if his joke came off the wrong way, and agreed it was in bad taste. He's a comedian, its what they do. I have no problem with that. She's just now taking this "how dare you" attitude to be self righteous about it, when I agree with other's here that she's about as guilty of exploiting her children as he is of making fun of the wrong one.

She's milking this for all that it's worth and then some. If she wanted to issue a statement defending her daughter and scolding Letterman, fine whatever. Instead she's using it as an opportunity to do a media tour and just drawing more attention to a joke that only a minority of people would have ever heard if she had kept things low-key.

Edit: For the record, I think the joke was in poor taste. Palin's response to it disgusts me, however.

We?re such an advanced and forward thinking nation, treating women with respect and dignity. Our progressive stance puts us leaps and bounds over those toothless southern rednecks and Muslim oppressors who treat women like slaves. Proud to be an American.

This is sad.

Letterman apologized and Palin should have rose above the event and made some larger comment and turned this bad into a good.

Something like:
"Mr Letterman has a apologized and I accept his apology. I think it is time in this country that we stop using the children and families of politicians as punch lines for jokes. My daughters are going about living their lives just like every other American teenage and deserve better than to be made fun of for a few cheap laughs."

BTW did Leterman ever crack jokes about Chelsea?
"We have just learned Chelsea got an intern position today, no word on whether she will be sitting behind a desk or on her knees under the desk"

I am sure a joke like that would have been ignored by the media too.

How would anyone with common sense think this was not referring to the 14 year old? Who was at the game? I would say a far greater indicator of our countries descent into idiocy is people defending a man who makes a joke about rape of a 14 year old girl, regardless of how much you dislike her mother. Justify it to yourself by saying it was about the 18 year old, and maybe it was intended to be, but who was at the game. Even if that was how the joke was intended, he should be intelligent enough to know that it could easily be interpreted to mean the other daughter. While I think she would have been better off to simply ignore the SOB, she has every right to be upset. Whether Dave wrote the joke himself or not, even he wouldn't apologize for it, not even admitting it would be easy to take the joke as referring to the 14 year old, since she was the one at the game.

I'm not sure if he did or not, it wouldn't surprise me if he did though. Chelsea Clinton got hit pretty hard while she was in the White House.

Did you see the "apology". It was not an apology, but an arrogant explanation aimed to get more laughs from the audience. A serious apology about something this severe should not be done in a laughing matter.
