Palm Pre free update to WebOS 2.1

For any Palm Pre users out there....this worked great for me. I updated my Verizon Palm Pre+ to WebOS 2. Doing that along with running uberkernal & Govnah, now I have basically converted my original Pre+ into a Pre 2 (minus the glass screen) but with better battery life (due to under-clocking when the screen is not 'on'). Very easy to do, especially if you have a Ubuntu or other Linux machine to do it on. Also, there are lots of other homebrew apps available in the community to play with.

This will help hold me over until my new every two contract resets this fall when I'll either get a Pre3 or maybe an Android device. I just want my next phone to be 4G LTE whatever it is...

Supposedly now that HP is in charge they are going to be putting out much better stuff. And working to expand the app market.

Overclocking is available whether you update to WebOS 2 or not. It's all in Pre-Ware. WebOS 2 updates a lot of the apps and fixes this but everything is essentially the same functionally. Just seems smoother and faster to me but that could be due just to the overclocking.

Updating to 2.x is a one way street I think. You lose the ability to update your roaming tower list as well I believe. It's just not worth the effort for me.

I'm still crossing my fingers for a Pre3 on Sprint "in the coming months"

@indamixx99... damn, mine is the 2nd one. Only because the power button broke twice in two days. They agreed to send me a refurb at month 11 Though, the power button broke on this too, but I fixed it myself permenantly-ish. Hasn't rebroken since (rubber band mod, search on precentral forums if anyone is wondering). But my brother? He still has his original day 1 Pre. Power button was fixed on his too.

It is not a one-way street. You can 'doctor' to the previous version of WebOS if you want.

No reported problems with Roaming towers for any carriers that I read about. For Verizon..."In order to update your PRL, you will need to manually program your phone OTA by dialing *228 from the dialer, and choose the "Program your phone" option". Worked fine for me.

I would like a Pre3 but don't want one if it doesn't have 4G capability. Maybe I'll have to wait for a Pre4.

I have an original Palm Pre, not the Pre Plus (thus, Sprint). There's a way, but I'm not going to trust it's reliability.

It'll be interesting if the Pre3 will be HSPA+ at least, given the Veer will be. And will be advertised as 4G. HP has really dropped the ball on this take over. They rebooted and are seemingly taking too long to get anything out the door.

The original Pre is not supposed to run WebOS 2 so great, anyway, since it only has 256MB ram but Govnah has a memory compression setting that is supposed to help. The Pre+ that I have has 512MB.

I am running 2.1 on my Verizon Pre+. My sunspider benchmark went from 11,700ms to 6,500ms. So, besides the new features like Just Type and stacking cards, it seems that javascript performance has improved in 2.1. I can't wait to try out a Pre 3. I am not sure if I want to go back to a large phone again though.

Oh how I wish my Sprint Pre hardware hadn't sucked so bad. Granted uber+govnah helped but by the time it got better my mind was already made up to chuck it in the river as soon as possible.
