Found this seemingly excellent deal on Panaflo 120MM: Link
So what is wrong with this price? I don't care about the RPM sensing pin as long as the thing works and is quiet as all hell. Are these not the really quiet, legendary Panaflo's? Thx for the help

"but the rpm sensing pin is not active."

Says it all right there... I picked up a couple of those model fans, only to find out later about the RPM sensing not working (didn't get it from that place). Now, I'm trying to find a model that does have the RPM sensing active to place onto my processor.

So I guess that means if you wanted to control the RPM with a fan controller or mobo, that wouldn't work. But is that all? I'm contemplating these for a future case that uses 120mm fans & probly an XP-120 HSF. As long as they are quiet @ full RPM, I really wouldn't care. Thx

On the same note, has anyone had any experience with Vantec Stealth 120MM's? How quiet are they compared to the Panaflo's? CFM seems ok, like 53. Thx again!

You can still control the fan speed with a hardware fan controller, you just won't have any monitoring capabilty......

That is a good deal...RPM monitor or not.

Great case fans...Quiet not really...But 7 volted they are reasonably quiet and 5 volted they are near silent.

I find most any fan can be tamed by either 7 or 5 volting them...Easily done without costing any money just by changing the fan wires.

If I did not have a bunch of 120m/m Sanyo Denki's I would be all over that deal as long as they dont kill you on the shipping...I say go for it.

Could you possibly describe or link me to undervolting the fans? Doesn't it involve connecting some resistors in parallel with the fan power connector lines? I genuinely prefer things to be ready to go out of box, so if anyone can suggest some super quiet 120MM's, I would be willing to spend the $ on them.

Perhaps the RPM wire is just not hooked up or is missing. If you got inventive you could probably run your own wire...

No you need, in order to gain the RPM sensing to find one of the fans with BX in the model number.

Additionally although Panaflos are VERY nice fans, their 120mm fan is no where near like there 80mm or 92mm. I would HIGHLY suggest trying to find Yate Loon who makes the Ultra QUiet fans for Seasonic PSU's. Also the Nexus fans are decent.

Authority on Silent Computing : Go to the recommended section. That should give you a good idea of the best fans on the market.

If it is as their quote implies "pin is not active", then adding your own wire to a dead pin will not enable the monitoring.

No adding your own wire or tail will do nothing. THe sensor is simply not there on the models without BX in the model number.

That's what I said, "adding your own wire to a dead pin will not enable the monitoring."

"Could you possibly describe or link me to undervolting the fans? Doesn't it involve connecting some resistors in parallel with the fan power connector lines? "

Very easy actually...And no it does not require connecting resistors or any of that business...Just changing some wires around...And those Panflo's are super quiet 5 volted.

The yellow female pin connector wire on a molex connector off of the power supply is the 12 volt line, with the red being the 5 volt line.

Now on most fans the red wire is the 12 volt line and the black wire is the ground...Yep they are different than the felmale molex connector off of the power supply.

If you have a male molex pin remover you just take the black wire off of the fan that is the ground and connect it to the 5 volt line...You have 12 volts from the molex connector and by connecting the ground to the 5 volt line what you end up with is 12 volts minus 5 volts will give you 7 volts.

To 5 volt a fan you take the 12 volt wire off the male fan molex connector and connect it to the 5 volt female off of the power supply and just leave the black ground wire where it is.

Much easier than hooking up a fan bus...And gives you the ability to take just about any fan that is too loud and taming it...I do not recommend 5 volting cheap fans.

"So I guess that means if you wanted to control the RPM with a fan controller or mobo, that wouldn't work."

No a fan controller has a reostat that allows you to change the voltage to the fan...Turn the controller all the way up and you are getting 12 volts and it decreases the fans RPM by decreasing the voltage to the fan...I just do not like fan controllers...Especially considering how easy it is to 7 or 5 volt them.

If anybody is intrested and am confused by my explanation I can post some pictures.

That?s about what they should cost to buy, Panaflow is fan manufacture unlike Vantec or Nexus that mark up fans from others for profit.

charlietee how do you like your 120mm Sanyo's? I have a 80mm; it's incredibly queit about equal to my Panaflow LIA's (really F'ing quiet).

I think Nexus makes there own fans as well.

For 120mm however i would recommend Acoustifan or Yate Loon. The 120mm Panaflo, although still very nice, has a bit of chatter, and bearing noise.

However i LOVE my Panaflos running at 1/3 speed. Have 4 80mm Panaflos running at 1/3 speed which i can barely hear. Then a 92mm Panaflo running at 1/3 speed for the CPU fan. Additionally i have the OCZ Powerstream PSU which is very quiet.

Nexus use's Yate Loon, at least for their 120mm fans, Acoustifan use's Globe; both charge to much IMO.

I had one of these...accidently sent me the wrong one. This at 5V is almost passable, but still has bearing noise that drove me crazy. 12V, this thing is quite loud, at least it was in my case.
The M stands for medium speed... try to find the L version, it's at least a decently quiet fan.
Don't waste your time if you're looking for quiet, but if you don't care about noise, can't beat $6 for a panaflo
