Just as an alternative if you don't need to wall-hang, Amazon has the 2006 model HL-S5087 50" 1080p DLP set for $2199 shipped (ASIN: B000F2R5HO).

This set has true 1080p HDMI inputs, game mode to remove lag, 10-bit color processing, and isn't super-thin but is under 18" deep and under 80 lbs. so it can go on an existing stand if you have one.

From what I've been reading, plasma sales have declined in the last few months in favor of new faster LCD's. They're doing 40+" LCD's with 8ms screens and higher resolutions. Opinions?

That is totally not true. Plasma is top selling for 42in and above. Plasma definitly have the best black levels bar non and just look awesome. I would never trade in my 50in plasma for a LCD. Panasonic is one of the best makers of plasmas until you get into the elite brands like pioneer elite. I have an LG/Zenith unit and its just awesome.

Yes, plasma is the top selling right now for 42" and above, but their sales are declining in favor of new generation LCD's in the last few months (didn't I just say that?). I'm thinking that LCD's are going to eventually take over due to their benefits (lighter, more rugged, brighter, etc). Check out the new products coming out from Sharp and Samsung and read a few of the tech journals to see what I'm talking about.

I am in the market and have been told to only buy lcd since I intend to use it to game as well. I was told that plasmas still have a burn in factor and will not last in that use.

that is very true and very over rated. burn in exists, much like a real hot chick that cooks and cleans.:Q

The newer plasmas have a "burn in" prevention system that gets rid of this issue somewhat. There's a routine that you go through that removes any burn in images + the screens are a bit more burn proof that the older ones. It still happens, but it's not as much of an issue as it was at one time.

My dad put in a plasma 2 years ago and in the top corner where the cable puts in the channel display. It is burnt in the screen. I don't know if the newer ones are any better. I haven't been reading up on them. Personally I wouldn't have one but that does seem to be a good price if you are in the market for one.

Nice price. I play games on my 42" plasma that I got almost 3 years ago. No worries with burn in. You do need to take care of them though. After playing a game for long hours, I use the screen wipe feature for ~ 20 minutes and everything is fine. It may sound like a hassle, but I feel that plasma is superior to LCDs. No lag, great picture, deeper blacks, higher contrast. Everyone can have there own opinion. I have LCDs too.

I own this Plasma and it is simply an awesome Television. Standard Def from analog cable is good, Digital is very good, and HD is outstanding.

Panny makes a great TV and outstanding Plasmas. Indeed Consumers Reports rated last years sets as the number one Plasma and just last week has confirmed that this years models have even more to offer.

You would really have to work at trying to burn one of these with the updated technology.

Jump on this deal if you are in the market!

LCD's can burn in too but it would literally take a static image 1 week or longer in the same place to do it.

Also, 720p is just fine for a 50" display. You'd be hard pressed to see a big difference between a 720p and 1080p 50" set when viewing it from a normal distance. But if you are looking for something bigger than 50" (more like 60"+), I would prefer getting a 1080p set. But like I said, 720p for a 50" HDTV is great.

IMHO, with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD just around the corner, no one should be purchasing a non-1080p TV for their main viewing area. The HD-DVDs I saw on display at Best Buy did in fact say "1080p" on the back of the box even though the only current HD DVD player from Toshiba only supports up to 1080i. Nonetheless, I think that just before and after the release of the PS3, 1080p will become more of the norm and a requirement for anyone getting a new flat screen display.

I was very ready to pick one up this month so that I didn't have to move my honkin old Sony Wega one last time, but since there's so little 1080p material immediately available, I decided to wait until November. Sure enough, I still carried the darn thing up 3 flights of stairs! Never again!

I will say that the plasmas are SO much better when it comes to color palletes, blacks, etc...but the need for 1080p is here, and the nicer LCDs nowadays are getting closer and closer to what plasmas can achieve. The Christmas 2006 season should be very interesting!

It's not a bad deal, but I think resolution suffers compared to the new LCDs coming out. Like the 42in and 47in Westinghouse LCDs that can do 1920x1080 or 1080p. To me the main benefit of plasma is the deeper blacks, other than that it's not that much better than LCD and you do have to pay more.

Despite the price differential many posters on avs will tell you that the panasonic plasmas are still better.

Plasma? LCD? I'll take a DLP at a higher resolution with a brighter screen at 2/3's the price myself. For less than the price of a good 50" 720p plasma you can get a DLP over 60" at 1080p. If you don't need to put it on the wall it's a great bargain.

No they won't. They still recognize Pioneer Elite and Fujitsu as the top plasmas. Panasonic comes in as the best if price is a concern.

Gee, here is a post about a great plasma TV for a great price. And someone says, yeah, but if you pay twice as much, you can get something that some people ancedotally think is better. Pioneer Elite and Fujitsu are basically afterthoughts in the plasma market, unless you are in the 20K club.

I own a 42in panny plasma and a 61in 1080p dlp set. In the 42-50in category, plasma is king. At 60inches and above is where the extra resolution begins to shine for dlps.

Resolution is not everything folks.
