As the sets age they are set to slowly increase the black levels.

Well this sucks.

Is there any way to reverse this? That would explain my set's very lousy black levels.

As my set has aged too, I found that disabling "pixel shake" which basically works to prevent burn-in, stops the annoying pink dot artifacts from appearing, at the expense of possibly damaging the display.

LOL, welcome to 2010.

The IQ on my set would have to decrease pretty significantly for me to consider it close to LCD's that cost the same ($600 for a 50" last year).

Still, sucks for enthusiasts/videophiles though.

Plasma screens still command big time. My Pioneer PDP433CMX from more than 10 years ago still kicks ass as my everyday monitor. All the negative hype about burn ins and brightness fading over time was never experienced by most users but the LCD/LED fanboy screens overwhelm the market these days. I guess most people will just remain ignorant to the superiority of the plasma format. It's also a bummer that Panasonic is bailing from the plasma market because their screens were rated very well, as were the screens from Pioneer. The Kuro was sublime. Why they stopped making that I still cannot understand. That leaves us in the near future with only LG and Samsung. Not too happy about that either. Wake up sheeple! Plasma is what you really need!

the black level rise really has not been an issue since the XX10 series in 2009

the XX20 series and nerwer should not have issues

My plasma was fried by a power surge a few months ago. I managed to repair it by replacing a board, but still it hasn't been quite the same since. So I can't really know how well the repair was handled (damn thing was out of warranty too) since I have nothing to compare it with.

So maybe the bad black levels I'm seeing is because of the design and not the repair job.

I think I've fixed the poor black levels problem. I set it from "dark" to "light" settings and I put it on a more vivid setting.

But what happens now is that dark scenes are pretty noisy.

It seems that setting brightness to zero wasn't working.

I have a Panasonic plasma, just bought a Sharp Q+ LCD.

The LCD is just junk, pure junk. Regret buying an LCD tv, junk.

Yeah this old news and no longer the case for the newer models. They (CNET) actually did a test of the longevity of newer models and found the blacks get a little deeper during use in the first two years.
