Greetings,
If you have a progressive scan TV, this is the player for you. (Sage Faroudja chipset).
Got there at good guys to use the $25 off $200 instant rebate (Expired yesterday) last nite. (price was $229). But the price shown on register screen is $179!! Too bad that I need to wait 2 weeks for it since it is back-ordered.

Do you have an add or a scanned receipt you could pass along... I wouldn't mind going and buying one at the local CC or Fry's... and either trying to PM with them... or go the ol' Amex Blue route.

That player rox0rs!!! Picture is like butta'

Yah, I got on this one! I'm looking around at the DVD players and see the RP56 for 179 and started gibbering at the salesclerk. Then I bought it. This is one awesome player, though the progressive scan didn't help as much as I thought it would. The components really helped though.

If you read the reviews on epinions, the ratings are pretty high for the dvd player.

CKKOBA.... same question for you... got a scanned receipt or add from the store so I can do some PM'ing???? I want this player... its has a cleaner picture than my Sony DVP-NS700P. ugh. Wish I would not have ordered it on-line or I would have taken it back and bought the Panny.

As far as I know, this player is not hackable. And it can't play SVCD properly.

Can you see a difference with progressive scan DVD players on non-digital TVs? eg. the Sony KV32FS13 Wega?

Not sure about on Tube TV's,

But when I watch a non-progressive scan picture on my Sony VPL-VW10HT Front Projector, I get all bitter and upset becuase of the jaggies and line crawl etc. UGH. Prog. Scan is da BOMB. Now if they could just get their butts in gear and get that 720p DVD going!!! That will rox0r!!!!!!!

My TV is a KP-61HS10 which is a Hi-Scan projection TV. Progressive mode can really make a HUGE difference. The picture is much sharper and color is more vibrant. For 480i (non progressive) mode, this player's picture quality is similar to my first generation Sony player back in 98.

You will see the scan line more clearly in progressive mode because most sony Hi-Scan projection TV has the line doubler (DRC) which will be turned off in progressive scan mode.

Huh?
The line doubler is attempting to do what progressive scan does, create a 480p picture.
I don't understand what you mean.

I am talking about the Sony's HD ready TVs. The DRC will turn the 480i signal to 960i signal. Maybe your TV is different.

There was a guy on avsforum.com talking about making a firmware update to bypass region coding. But, I don't know if it was ever produced. I have the RP56, and I want a firmware update to bypass the user lockout crap (e.g. FBI warning that it forces you to watch, no fast forward). But, he said they were unable to create a stable firmware that allowed this.

Also, If you guys are using Progressive DVD's, you should also check out an HDTV decoder (many of the high end DirecTV decoders support HD). If you think the quality of progressive DVD (720x480) is good, you'll be blown away by the quality of HDTV (1920x1080). The HBO-HD channel on DirecTV rocks!
