Yeah, I'm very familiar with that one.
I've been scouring for good LEDs though, and a more affordable approach to instant-on whenever the TV is turned on.

I'll probably have to settle on cinemaquest's products.

But see, that's what annoys me - you've already replaced two bulbs in seven years?
Do you use one bulb/light bar at a time, or do you have two running to cover your enter display area?
Are the ballasts internal to the bulb, or is there a distinct/replaceable ballast in the light bar itself?

If you've only replaced two bulbs once each, that's not too bad. If you're already on a third bulb, ugh. That's why I dislike fluorescent (are these straight fluorescent, or CCFL? (cold cathode, not compact). Regardless, such lighting tech typically struggles with excessive on/off cycles. Wonderful for once on/off a day or constant light, but for home use, LED has proved the way to go. Just, temperature and CRI seems to still be sub-par in comparison.
-Mine is instant-on because I plugged it into my DVR 120v plug on the back of the unit. That in turn is added to a step of every Harmony display-centric activity.
-I use one light assy.
-Ballast is in the bar assy.
-Just two, straight 6500k fluorescent.
-Replacement bulb is ~$13

I don't have any switched devices (plug on back on unit). My cable box is a PC, and my receiver surprisingly doesn't have one (a cheaper Marantz unit - my previous HK receiver did have one).

So you use one bulb at a time?
You haven't needed to replace the ballast yet?

lots of receivers dont have them anymore. and not just cheap ones. my Onkyo 818 does not have one and neither does the Yamaha RX-A3000

So the incoming doom of no more Panny plasmas combined with a clearance sale means I have a 60 inch st60. Compared to the st50 I can tell a difference, the picture is less soft and has more pop.

Where did you find it on clearance?

Aw crap, the screen has some slight Burn In/IR. You can barely see the words "Panasonic" in the middle on a white screen.

Sigh, I would take it back and exchange it but they said it was the last one. Best Buy warranty cover burn-ins so I could sign up when they mail the offer to me and turn it in, but I think given these are gone they would try to refund or give me an LED something instead.

Or I guess I can play with pixel flippers and the like and accept it. Honestly it is very faint and only seen on a completely white screen. I will never watch the Winter olympics or ice hockey on this TV (that is what the ST50 is for) so I might just forget about it.

Decisions decisions.

Look up D-Nice's color slides. You don't have to necessarily run them for 100 hours as suggested, but... I'd highly suggest you do. The main purpose is to equally age the phosphors, which, aside from helping to improve the chance of any calibrations holding accurately, also help significantly reduce the possibility of Image Retention.

What you are seeing is highly likely just a case of Image Retention on a brand new set. Running the color slides for a day should a) clear it up, and b) help reduce the chance of seeing it so easily again.

Only if I pause a screen for a long time do I see any hints of IR. Staying on a channel with corner logos or a ticker like ESPN hasn't caused IR that I've noticed. If I got right up on the screen and looked right after changing channels? Possibly, but if it's there at all, it goes away quickly.

you might contact Panasonic. I read through the service manual for my ST30, and apparently IR problems are the result from certain voltages being set wrong/too high.

I've had an ST30 that I've been very abusive to (liberal HTPC usage), and with over 2500 hours, there is no IR of any kind. The only thing I ever seen that resembles IR, is for brief moments on a black screen if the TV hasn't warmed up yet. I also have an ST60 with about 600 hours on it, it's been treated the exact same way and I've never even witnessed IR, even briefly.

Local Best Buy has a P60VT60 display model for $1582. I checked it out, it has maxed out contrast settings, 2000-3000 hours clocked, and a manufacture date of April 2013 (so the fan issue may be present), but I played some test patterns and saw no burn in at all. Tempted at the price, but I am very wary of an open box plasma.

on the flip side, i ran his slides the first 125 hours my tv was on, and i have a slight permanent burnin on the bottom right corner from the trutv logo. i have an st50 and my tv is about 16 months old. it really is only noticeable though when you are looking for it and the background is a solid white (or light) color.

The one good thing with leaving the Store Display Model Default Settings left on (i.e. how it ships from factory) and having that number of hours clocked: the panel should be perfectly broken in and look perfect on test patterns and overall performance.

But I'm with you: open box plasma? From Best Buy? Part of me says, "Great deal! And I don't have to even worry about breaking it in!"
The other part of me says, "Run away! Run away!"

It should still have plenty of life left in it.

I'd see if I could talk the store manager into dropping that price a little more.
And I'd really, really want Best Buy's extended warranty on that - while the future of Plasma is grim, at least money back (towards another set) is worthwhile.

That sounds a little expensive for an open box set with that many hours on it. They were selling for ~$1800 new not long ago. I might consider it if they throw in the warranty for free.

best buy clearance

I'd definitely wave that in there face and see what you can get out of them.

If I had the cash, I'd definitely try and hit up that clearance price. I have the P50ST60... 10 more inches and a step up to the VT model? oooo do want

I tried to order the P55VT60 and the P60VT60 on their website, but I can't deliver to my home address or to any stores nearby.

For clearance sales like that, they probably won't. Stock is low and I'm not sure if they'll set up delivery unless a local store has it.

Have you tried in store? As in, checking to see if a store can order it and have it shipped to that store? From there you could set up delivery or just take it.
They might not go to those lengths for clearance items, though.

But if you are remotely interested in that display model, I would not settle for that price - show them you know of the clearance price and want some compensation for the amount of use that display has already seen. Free extended warranty or further reduce the price.

Happy dance! Just refreshed Amazon's page and 1 brand new P55VT60 came back in stock! I ordered and then got the Amazon rep to PM Best Buy's clearance price of $1599! So excited, should be coming next Tuesday!

The best way to negotiate this is to ask for a REDUCED price on the TV itself and agree to buy the warranty if they can make it net out to what you want.

They are taught to fight for those warranties. Close outs/clearances they are taught to push out the door.

I'd buy it. BB will sell you a warranty for it.

I got the same TV for $1800 brand new, shipped. I don't know what the supplies are like at the moment but a warranty would be another $150 or so and with tax it puts it at the same price as a good deal on a new one. I would look to see about that. I think Amazon was selling them for $1800 recently and I got mine from Paul's TV.
