Authorities have discovered a mild form of avian influenza at a live bird market in New Jersey, but it is not the deadly H5N1 strain governments around the world are trying to contain, the state's agriculture department said.

"The strain was found in a live bird market in Camden County. None of the birds in the market died from this virus, which is an indicator that the virus was low pathogenic and not harmful to humans," said a statement by New Jersey's Agriculture Secretary Charles Kuperus which was posted on Friday.

Of course it won't mutate.

Dave, I know you aren't big on reading but did you at least skim over what you posted?

You can't be 100% sure about anything... but in this case, 99% will do for me.

Will it mutate? Maybe. Will the mutation some monstrous super-deadly "The Stand"-like flu virus you hope it to be? Maybe. Will I be run over by a car and killed today during my lunch break? Maybe. Will none of these things come to pass? Maybe.

5-2-2006 U.S. Government Drafts Pandemic Flu Plan

WASHINGTON - Employers should have plans to keep workers at least three feet apart, colleges should consider which dormitories could be used to quarantine the sick, and flight crews should have surgical masks to put on coughing travelers under a draft of the government's pandemic flu plan obtained by The Associated Press.

The Bush administration forecasts massive disruptions

A response plan scheduled to be released at the White House on Wednesday warns employers that as much as 40 percent of the work force could be off the job and says every segment of society must prepare.

An outbreak could lead to a variety of restrictions on movement in and around the country

The report envisions possible breakdowns in public order and says governors might deploy National Guard troops or request federal troops to maintain order. The military also could be activated to enforce travel restrictions and deliver vaccines and medicines, the report says.

Just give it a rest. Seriously. World-renowned flu experts laugh at this scaremongering, yet you contrinue to post as if it's happening tomorrow.

Yes, people need to stop fearmongering. However, they won't.

There is always a chance that such a disaster could happen, but the fact is that there is nothing we can do to really prepare for it. It's simply not feasible to have logistics in place to handle so many sick and casualties.

Even in NYC, which is likely the best prepared city in the world (for anything), there is not anywhere near the amount of resources to handle such an outbreak. I've seen the contingency plans, and the most the city could ever hope to handle, would be 100'000 (1-1.5% of the population).

Dave, this is one of those rare occasions that I venture into P&N. I've seen many of your posts in OT. Never has one of your posts bothered me. However, I think that this post is among the most harmful posts I've ever seen in any of the forums. Either you are intentionally passing on meaningless information for the sake of raising fear in people, or you are incapable of understanding what you have posted.

For the record, I have a farm. I raise chickens and turkeys. And, I can tell you first hand, that birds getting sick is nothing unusual. There are many many forms of the flu going around that infect humans, and that infect other particular animals. The only important fact that you've listed is that it is not the H5N1 strain. This basically means that the "news" isn't news at all. The flu hasn't arrived in the United States. It's been here for a long time. It's just that the H5N1 strain hasn't been here before and still isn't here. Thus, "the day has arrived" is patently false.

I attended this conference last Thursday:

AVIAN INFLUENZA:
Science, Prevention and Policy from Birds to Humans

Thursday May 4th, 2006
Program from 6:00PM, reception from 5:30PM
Skirball Institute of Biomolecular Medicine
540 First Avenue

The speakers included the President of the American Society for Virology, the United Nations Coordinator for Avian and Human Influenza, a senior policy advisor to the Director General of WHO, head of the WHO Crisis management team, a specialists in avian population ecology, and many other prominent figures...

In short - the threat is largely part of an alarmist strategy by the media and the government, and has been vastly overinflated.

DrPizza, thanks for a thoughtful response. Dave has never been known to be able to think. I too rarely venture in here but dave's constant resurrection of old threads and misstatement of fact drive me to put my voice along side others here in condemning his alarmist chicken little prognostications.

If a virulent form of bird flu or other flu does hit, then it will. The government appears to be taking all reasonable steps and probably some unreasonable as well to prepare for a supposed pandemic.

The "day" may never arrive or it may arrive tomorrow. Comments like dave's add no value to any necessary steps we would need to take or consider. Like everything else dave says, he is best ignored.

I don't understand, did you miss my report from the conference on avian flu where people who're hell of a lot more informed than you (not to mention smarter) have said that they are not particularly worried?

Or is that another conspiracy to keep you from receiving a dose of a vaccine that doesn't work, or a medication that you really shouldn't have?

There are many many forms of the flu going around that infect humans, and that infect other particular animals. The only important fact that you've listed is that it is not the H5N1 strain. This basically means that the "news" isn't news at all. The flu hasn't arrived in the United States. It's been here for a long time. It's just that the H5N1 strain hasn't been here before and still isn't here. Thus, "the day has arrived" is patently false.

We'll soon find out quick enough.

Bahahahaha reasonable?

You call 20 million doses reasonable??? You must have a dose already secured.

Dave never lets actual, real facts get in the way of his conspiracy.

BTW, good luck on obtaining your MD/PhD.

The Day has arrived:

5-1-2006 Bird Flu Found At live Bird Market In New Jersey

Authorities have discovered a mild form of avian influenza at a live bird market in New Jersey, but it is not the deadly H5N1 strain governments around the world are trying to contain, the state's agriculture department said.

"The strain was found in a live bird market in Camden County. None of the birds in the market died from this virus, which is an indicator that the virus was low pathogenic and not harmful to humans," said a statement by New Jersey's Agriculture Secretary Charles Kuperus which was posted on Friday.

Of course it won't mutate.

Who's pwned so hard now???

5-19-2006 Human Bird Flu Confirmed Deaths Rise

JAKARTA, Indonesia, May 18 -- An international team of health investigators arrived on the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Thursday to determine whether an unusually large cluster of human bird flu cases indicates that the highly lethal virus has mutated into a form easily spread among people.
