Exercise more.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol as much as possible.

Just some suggestions. I am not a doctor. The doctor will probably want to put you on medication.

Yeah, unfortunately, most doctors want to stuff pills down people's throats for stuff like this. They need to get a life, and quick.

I like aredfs' suggestions better - exercise more, and AVOID caffeine and alcohol. But most importantly, work on releasing negative emotions from the past. Reduce stress - surely there has to be something in your life that is stressing you out - too much work that you've stalled on? Not enough rest? An unclean house? Fix those that stress you, even if you think they only stress you a little bit. Just don't be OCD about things. Fair balance.

When I started exercising and quit alcohol/caffeine (except for a glass of wine every once in a while), things started getting a lot better. Exercise = god for these sorts of things.

Giving up booze will be hard... I'm only 21 I stay away from caffeine anyways... I actually have been getting very poor amounts of sleep teh past few weeks as well. I have been trying to keep a very healthy diet, however.

About a month after my first wife died I thought I was having a heart attack, ended up in the hospital for two days. My doctor diagnosed a panic attack from the worst kind of stress you could imagine, my health was perfect.

Yes panic attacks are real and can be deadly if not treated for. The best thing that worked for me were relaxing deep breathing excersizes, feel an attack coming on and just start to breath slowly and deeply, thinking good thoughts.

I haven't had such an attack for 18 years now.

Any history of asthma or other breathing trouble? Oxygen deprivation can trigger panic attacks.

The best thing to do is see a psychologist. They will be able to help you identify the root of your problem. Doing this will enable you to better handle your anxieties and fears. Remember that anxiety is a regular part of life. It's the bad anxiety that needs to get rooted out. Some things that can alleviate your panic attacks are L-theanine (which can be found in green tea, or tablets), St John's Wort, Kava kava, breathing exercises, sports, walking or anything that you find that helps you gain control.

May be a withdrawal symptom from the alcohol.

If not, panic attacks are the worst thing I would wish on a person. Personally, I take meds for anxiety (figured out the panic and got over it, most of the time) but still get very bad anxiety attacks. The problem is the meds make me forget things, and in organic chemistry that is a bad thing. I just (Today.) got the disability office at school to lend me a recorder so I could tape lectures and then refer to my notes later.

See a doc but try not to be reliant on meds to control it, its a serious downward spiral.

i have librium but as odd as it sounds, i tried to use it 2 of the times and it made it worse. i thought it was withdrawals but it came on quick and didn't last all that long but i've been reading about panic attacks and alcohol tonight and apparently it is one of the more common causes. blah

I had very bad panic attacks for nearly ten years. I was on assorted SSRI's and tranquilizers throughout that time. Xanax worked the best for me. I had a running RX for it for years. It was nothing for me to end up in the ER at 2 am getting Valium mainlined into me to get me to relax. I knew it was just my mind going wild on me but I could do nothing to stop them. I was literally living in hell.

Here is the part that you guys will love to tear apart. A guy I knew told me how he had social anxiety really bad. Almost to the point where he couldn't leave his house. He was way worse than I thought I was. But he told me that he asked God to relieve him of his anxiety and it worked for him. I figured I would give it a shot. I asked God to take away my panic attacks, if only so that I could tell others of what he had done. I haven't taken a pill or had any kind of attack in over 5 months.

Say what you want...but I tried basically every kind of treatment available and all it did was lesson the panic attacks. I tried for 10 years to find something to take them away. Trusting God cured me overnight.

I suffer from Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia and Major Depression. I was diagnosed with both around the age of 21 and have been living with them ever since (10 years). The greatest tool I ever found was Cognitive-Behavioral therapy. It not only teaches you how to change the way you think, but also teaches you how to challenge your fears to overcome them. Using this style of therapy along with exercise (I like Yoga and Tai Chi) will help you overcome a lot of the somatic symptoms that come with panic attacks. You can also consider some of the milder anti-anxiety meds like Buspar if you wish to go the pill route. Good luck in your search for what works for you.

good luck.

I think he is trying to insinuate that the OP is some sort of pussy paranoid yuppie and not the shining piece of man meat he considers himself to be. If only he contained the ability to string together words to form rational thought, I am sure we all would inspire to such an amazingly stable person.
