Got my purple belt this weekend!

Unfortunately my back is still bothering me quite a bit, so much so that I decided against more KB swings last week and I've got an MRI scheduled for Tuesday. Not that I think it's THAT messed up but I would rather have the money I'm spending on PT go towards a fix rather than blind guesses - which is where we were. Where the pain manifested should have come from a nerve in the sacrum but it seems to be moving fine, now, and the other SI related symptoms don't exist. I've also got/had pain in my calf which wouldn't be associated with SI. I also had very limited ROM before lumbar spine manipulation in my left leg but the manipulation was only very temporary relief, a couple hours at best which neither doctor could figure out. And my favorite part, defending chokes hurt like hell in my hip glute, the same place it hurts when extending and raising my leg. Even if there was no torque on my back/neck. There have been days of jiu-jitsu that I haven't been able to do any drills because they're all chokes and even drilling with partners trying to take it easy is too much.

I just hope I'm able to be mostly recovered for 2 or 3 tournaments before the end of the year.

Man, that sux dude because you would have probably won States and possibly went to Nationals with some of the numbers you were putting up if you ever wanted to do powerlifting.

L5-S1 Herniation on the left side. Not sure how bad it is, yet. Have a followup with a spinal specialist Sept 5th to have them look over the MRI and see how to proceed. I'll probably limit my lifting until I know how bad it is and go from there.

Looks worse than I thought, from my limited knowledge it looks like it's about 11mm or so. Either way looks like a bit of rehab and less sitting at work. Any professionals out there want to take a stab at it? SC?

I recommend you rest and take good care of yourself for a long time now as these problems will be very resentfully terrible if they are allowed to progress. That goes for any and all spinal injuries.

There's a couple professionals that are over the web who have had the same issue with herniated disks - like Louie Simmons, Derek Poundstone, and Ronnie Coleman ... it might be worth your time to research them and see what they did to improve their condition... Stuart McGill might be worth you checking out too.

- a lot of people work on core stability, switch to front squat or squats that work one leg vs both, change their stance or technique to avoid rounding of the lower back and other issues, use gravity tables, and do stretches and/or massage work to help release tight muscles - to help prevent future problems after healing... it looks like you are doing most of it.

Well at least you know what it is now. The mystery part of an injury sucks.

That it does, the only reason I wanted to get the MRI to know what was going on because they couldn't figure it out without.

it looks like you are doing most of it.

I was doing all of that prior to getting injured. I'm almost positive that this wasn't caused by lifting. I don't know what caused it but there hasn't been anything in training that stands out and I'm very careful with my form. Probably how I was able to hit 545 with my injury.

Made it back to the gym today for a quick session. I'm going to use this as a gauge of where I should go from here.

Squats:
10x0
10x45
10x135
5x225
5x315
5x405

Bench Press:
10x135
5x225
5x245
5x275
5x315

Pull-ups:
10x3

Squats felt good, I think 405 was probably a bit heavy but I did them with no pain. I'm going to wait to see how I feel tomorrow before I make a decision on what weight to start back with. I was thinking 5x5x225 adding 20lbs a week upto 315 then adding 5-10lbs a week upto 405, assuming my body can handle that. Then switch back to Cube with a lower max probably close to 500 and work back from there until I'm sure it's healed.

I've also got an appointment with a spinal specialist sept 5th that may or may not change my mind on this path to recovery. But according to my PT, lifting it fine as long as it doesn't cause my any pain.

Bench Press:
10x135
5x225
5x275
5x325
3x335

Front Squats:
10x45
10x95
10x135
5x185

Squats:
5x225
3x5x315

Pull-ups:
9x4

Another "getting back into it" day, bench felt good, front squats were more difficult just because I'm trying very hard not to lean forward at all, and I had kinesio tape on my back so any forward movement was very noticeable. Back squats were very easy but I was a bit rushed so I just did 3 sets. Since diagnosis I'd say I'm 70-80% better than I was. Mostly just doing lots of press ups and some lower core work.

My ability to self-moderate is pathetic, I went into the gym thinking a couple sets at 315 would be fine...

Sqauts:
10x0
10x45
10x0
10x45
10x135
5x225
5x315
5x405
1x425
1x455
1x475
1x495

Pull ups:
3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3

A large variety of 2-5 reps of deadlifts and power cleans between 45-135lbs probably did a total of 15-20 sets but didn't keep track of any of it.

I'm still a bit hesitant to do most of my accessory work and deadlifts might be a bit slower to come back than squats were, we'll have to see when I'm more confident in my back. 135 obliviously wasn't difficult just going through the motions and keeping a very close eye on my form.

Still lifting, keeping it light for no apparent reason. Talked to the neurosurgeon today, which I wasn't impressed with, spent all of 5 min in the room with him. He ordered epidural injections and wanted to see me in 6-8 weeks to talk about surgery which I'm very against at this point....

Squats:
2x10x0
10x45
10x135
5x225
5x315
3x5x365
2x5x405
5x5x225 HB

Pull ups:
6x4, 3

This was a bit different than what I had been doing, I worked up to 5x5x315 and decided to change it up a bit moving up to 5x5x405. Everything felt great and went super smooth. Pull ups are moving along decently.

My back started bothering me Tuesday at work, so I skipped lifting. It was worse Wednesday so I skipped BJJ. It's not gotten much better since then with rest which concerns me a bit. I've been keeping up with my stretches/yoga/pt/whatever you want to call it.

Resting has been helping quite a bit, haven't lifted much over 400 since my last post and it's been fairly irregular. I did manage to make it to my first tournament as a purple belt and took first in the absolute gi and second in no-gi. I'm heavy enough that I didn't have a normal Gi division I just did absolute and no gi was a bit of a last minute deal, I was up on points when I got caught in a heel hook.

Tore my MCL Firday. Luckily it's a minor tear and I should, hopefully, be back in the gym in no more than a couple weeks. My back feels great 99% of the time, I'm sure when I start lifting more regularly that'll change but hopefully it's temporary. Getting old blows...

Made it back for the first time in a long time. Did 45 min of yoga followed by some light squats worked up to 5x5x225 and a single at 315 didn't notice any strength loss which was a positive.

Made it in yesterday too, no yoga just a quick squat session.

10x45
10x135
5x5x245
5x335
1x405

Felt good, 405 felt about the same as 335 which is reassuring, I was afraid after not lifting regularly for over a month and lifting light for a while before that, that there would be a lot of strength loss but ~70% of my old max felt light - as it should. My back is holdig up great this morning. I woke up without pain, aside from hamstring DOMS. Looking forward to being healthy for a while. The plan is the same as a month ago, adding 10lbs to my 5x5 until I get up to around 400 then getting back on my old Cube cycle at arounf 10% less than my previous cycle.

Bench Press:
10x135
5x225
5x245
5x265
5x2x315
2x15x135

Press:
10x45
3x10x135

Front Squat:
10x45
5x135
5x185
2x5x135

Triceps Extensions:
4x15x150

Lat pulldowns:
3x10x150

My first full workout in I don't know how long. Everything went ok, 315 felt a bit heavier than I would have liked it but managed to hit all 10 reps without issue. Front squats felt great. It's a bit early to tell for sure but I think I'm pretty much recovered.

Squats:
10x0
10x45
10x135
5x5x275
5x365
1x425

Pull ups:
5,4,4,4,3,3,3,3,2

5 min cool down walk + stretching and 15 min in the sauna.

Went into this not sure how it was going to go. I spent lots of Friday night sitting down so I was a bit more sore than I had been the last couple weeks but once I warmed up a bit squats felt great - I need to come up with a better routine while I'm building back up, my old routine put too much stress on my back and I've been too lazy to improvise while I'm at the gym.

More squats:
10x0
10x45
10x0
10x45
5x225
5x5x295

10min 3.5 mph walk warmup
5min 3mph cooldown
Stretch+ 10min in the sauna

Decided against going heavy, it seemed to be bothering me a bit last week. We'll see how just going with my 5x5 goes for the week.

Apparently forgot to log Tuesdays lifts...

Bench Press:
10x135
10x225
8x245
8x265
8x275

CG Bench Press:
3x10x185

Triceps pushdown:
3x15x160

Ez Bar Curls:
3x10x70

Seated Cable Rows:
3x12x170

Front Squat:
2x10x135
5x185
3x5x225

15-20min stretching/sauna

Just a high rep bench day with some FS tossed in at the end for good measure. The back is feeling pretty good still trying to take it slow with the weight. Stretching more religiously seems to be helping with everything(pain/lifting/BJJ)

Speaking of which, new goal for next year so I don't forget. IBJJF Pan Am's and Master/Senior World's - as my major goals, winning at either would be huge my goal is, as always, nothing less than first in every division I compete in. Realistically if I place in either I would probably be satisfied but I plan on working in an extra day of BJJ on Saturday's with a small group focusing on what I need to improve on as well as adding in, hopefully, 30-60 min a week of private lessons with one of the instructors at the gym. This also means a bit less emphasis on being super strong and maybe just focus on maintaining my strength. I'm also hoping this will give my back plenty of time to heal before going back to 600+ squats/deads.

Still rehabbing a bit and not logging worth a shit...

Tuesday:
Bench Press:
worked up to 3x3x315
CGBP: 3x10x225

Squats:
worked up to 1x495

Pullups/GHR

Sunday:
Squats:
10x0
10x45
2x10x135
5x225
5x5x315

Pullups:
5x5

GHR:
3x10

Reverse hyper-extensions:
3x10

495 went up easy Tuesday and didn't cause any lingering pain in my back which was huge, 5x5x315 also went quick with less than 60 seconds of rest between sets and I feel great. I've cut my NSAIDs down just taking them as needed from maxing out my dosage just a couple weeks ago. I still don't feel 100% though so I'm going to continue to take it easy and allow everything to heal up before really pushing it.

I've also started my private lessons to prep for Pan Am's in March. The general idea is to add techniques(1-2 a week) up until about 8 weeks out at which point it's just refining what works best for me leading up to that point. In addition to privates I'm also doing small group work on the weekends for an hour or 2 which gives me time to work on specific drills/positions/techniques basically as much as I need for free. I'm being careful not to spread myself too thin, neither of these are not very intense sessions but more focused on getting good muscle memory and figuring out what works for me and what I shouldn't waste time on.

Not many people I know do both powerlifting and bjj. May want to think about not lifting extremely heavy anymore b/c that could affect your bjj sessions and maybe that's what caused your last injury. My powerlifting training is similar to yours and no way I'd want to do bjj the same or next day, even sparring for an hour (did martial arts in the past). Your joints and ligaments take a huge toll when lifting heavy; I try to take it easy on off days with light abs or biking/walking/stretching/foam rolling/stim to get blood flowing for recovery but of course I'm an old man (late 30's) - you younger whipper snappers may be able to recover faster.

Yea, I'm sure I'll have to start slowing down at some point. Or start on some sort of TRT protocol, which is more likely. Really I don't feel that lifting has been impacting my rolling much at all, I'm sure I'd have a bit more energy if I quit lifting but I can roll for an hour+ of 6-7 min rounds with 30-60 seconds of rest so i'll keep going for as long as I can keep going. If I get hurt more I'll probably slow down quicker, but I really think the injury was from not doing enough of the right types of mobility work. I suppose I'll have to wait and see.
