Hi everyone. I consider myself an avid SFF and Mini-ITX fan since the Lynnfield days. I am currently using a full-sized ATX motherboard and have been brainstorming different ways on how to utilize all the "surplus" space in my rather empty case. One of the things that stuck out was that despite the fact that my case has seven expansion slots, I've only been using three of them- all for the graphics card cooler. This got me thinking.
Are there any 3rd party GPU cooling products on the market (in past or present) that have mounted a 92mm fan with its motor axis parallel to a graphics card PCB? I would imagine it would look similar to an HSF of a rack-mounted server processor like this, but with an expanded and longer fin array. Perhaps this type of HSF might be able to dissipate heat more quickly because the direction of the air flow isn't blocked off by the PCB, not to mention the increased surface area compared to other heatsinks that are limited to two expansion slots in width.
Now, I think I know what some of you may be thinking. With a 92mm fan, this HSF concept would occupy five expansion slots and block off a sixth, an egregious waste of space to some. But I have no need for multiple graphics or add-on cards and would much rather utilize this extra space than let it sit empty. Thoughts?
