12:01 last night my 21 yr. old daughter rolls over from her belly to right side, hears / feels a "pop" in the left side / groin area...pain for a couple minutes then numbness and now paralysis in her left leg and anal cavity.

Now tonight after full mri and barrage of test, nothing is wrong that they can see,so tomorrow is going to be some type of painful nerve testing.

She also says the numbness is advancing up her left side a couple inches roughly.....

She has no health issues before this besides being overweight by 80# + and has has a few knee surguries and a recent nasal operation a few weeks ago.

Anyone ever heard or experienced this ?

I am really worried now...

:'(

EDIT : 4/20 ....

Well she had a another but much worse episode 2 days ago....

This time she was fine, unloading dishes from the washer, came in the living room, sat down and went limp, totally unresponsive to yelling, pinching and even the knuckle rub on the chest, nothing but was breathing.....called 911 and got her back to the hospital.

So we get her there and she opens her eyes shortly after getting there but she cannot talk or move except for squeezing her hands,we would ask can you her me,if so squeeze my hand, she was responding that way and then the dr. came in and was asking here yes / no questions and to blink once for yes twice for no and she was doing that.

Then after about a hour she starts going into a "convulsion" type shaking for a few seconds every few minutes and then every couple minutes would raise her upper body off the table ,eyes wide open gasping for air in one big gasp, then fall back to the table breathing normally....very scary and creepy at the same time...it really got to me seeing that,I just broke down...

So after getting her admitted, yesterday she wakes up,starts talking and is getting her functions ( limb control ) back again and being being released again later today, they are blaming it on weight and stress which is bullshit IMO .

Interesting. So what she's describing is more of a spinal cord/nerve root issue. I'm not quite sure HOW she could do something so significant with just rotating in bed, but it could be something that was around before and just got aggravated. She's describing something like cauda equina syndrome. The cauda equina constitutes the rest of the spinal nerves that come down after the spinal cord ends. It's pretty serious, but the neural tests should definitely yield some results. The migration of symptoms upward is likely just due to inflammation from the original issue.

Does she also have numbness in the groin/saddle area? How about bowel and bladder control? Does she have trouble with that, especially in certain postures?

Yes,I am hoping for some answers with the tests today.

Only numbness is the left leg + left side of stomach / side, bladder control is intact as well as any B.M....

I am going back this morning, will update then...

Well, everyone is stumped, they ruled out the CES and everything else,so a different neurologist is coming in today and the insurance is about to run out as they only allow so many days of "diagnostics" ( can't think of the proper term ? ) and the issue is she lives in a duplex with 17 stairs to get in....

Heading back there now, will update later.

This happened to a friend of mine. Unfortunately this was the first sign of what had been a long brewing tumor pressed against her spinal column.

I hope the MRI would rule that out (and based on my very small knowledge of medicine, it should?) but get as many tests as possible because with her it took over three months before specialists at Mayo Clinic realized it was cancer.

Could also be a herniated disc impinging on the central portion of the SC. But like The-Noid said, it could be a mass impinging on structures as well. In addition to that, it could be a variety of degenerative neurological conditions that can be managed with medications and avoiding certain positions/activities. Waiting is the worst part in all of this though. Try not to think of all the "what could it be"s - just be there for your daughter 'cause she scared right now. Hope everything turns out well.

Hopefully they find something. My Dad's paralyzed from the waste down and while the initial cause was obvious (stabbed in the back multiple times) no amount of scanning/diagniosis ever showed why exactly he remains paralyzed.

Not really hear to derail the thread, but the fact of the matter is your father likely had damage to the spinal cord. The spinal cord, unlike peripheral nerves, doesn't regenerate. He remains paralyzed because fibers of his corticospinal tract within the spinal cord were severed at a certain level.

Well the dr.'s are still clueless but after the awesome insurance ran out they discharged her day before yesterday and I have been doing soem therapy exercises and range of motion and she started getting feeling back yesterday and had her walking w/ the walker and she is now able to move her foot / leg forward now instead of dragging it like before....

So this is a good thing and will continue to work with her till she is back in the saddle and she has already started a new diet and schedule to drop them xtra #'s as this was a wake up call for her I guess,so that is a another positive taken from this..

Thanks for the support everyone,I was scared for a while....

Yea, but he was never directly hit in the spine, and they looked like crazy for damage.

Rogue class allows backstab/critical hit, deals massive damage. Combined with magic weapons/acid/poison etc, very likely could lead to paralysis.

Not quite sure what to say to this

OP, best wishes; hoping for a speedy recovery.

Get her to a major hospital emrgency ASAP. There are lots of things this can be some degenertive and some not. Tell them to not stop testing until they find something. My friend was sick for a few days and then woke up one morning paralyzed from the shoulders down. They did not rush to find something and were not that agressive. several days later they found she had a virus that awas similar to poliio and now the damage is permanent. Thye just got done handicap retrofitting her house.

That is a shame she is a young married woman with two small kids.

How is the weight loss coming for her? That 80# definitely was not good for her.

I am really tired in every possible meaning of the word,I wish my ins. would pay for a Physiologist but no such luck so all the stress get stuffed away till the day comes that I cannot stuff anymore in there....and that day does not seem far off,sadly...

Well I am going to bed,I am beat and she will be home later ....

Thanks for listening and the advice / help....

I think at this point, it's vital that you get to the bottom of this. Them saying it's stress just sounds to me like they don't really know what's going on. If the episodes are getting worse, the next one could kill her.

My thoughts exactly, they ran out of insurance and ideas so blame it on stress, granted her weight is not helping but never saw this happen to anyone from stress + weight ?

Not sure where to go next ?

Well, the weight in itself does put her at certain risks. She could be having thrombi forming related to her diet and her weight, causing mini-strokes either within the spinal cord or brain or both. As they clear up, she gets better. Stress has a wide array of effects on the body, affecting blood pressure, which could be throwing the clots. Honestly, this might be the biggest sign to start losing weight. The condition and the weight aren't unrelated most times. I'm so sorry that she (and you) are going through this I hope the MDs can find what's going on.
