Parenting win!

This morning I had to visit a job site where we have a contract filling in old mine shafts and tunnels and the subcontractor needed direction on some of the work. On my way out, I came across a family standing out in the middle of the two track (five kids, age range ~5-10). The father waved me down. He wanted to know how to get to a particular mine because the mine he had brought his kids out to play in had already been backfilled but he remembered another good one around there somewhere. I was in my personal truck so he didn't know I was working on filling in the holes. The particular tunnel he was looking for was already blocked by a bat gate (openings sized to allow bats to come and go but too small for people). That tunnel had been closed because there are so many bats living in there that the tunnel contains pockets of ammonia gas at toxic levels.

The more I reflected on the situation, the more retarded the parents became.

Well no. When I was a kid, I would have done it without telling my mom. Why would an adult want to do this?

When I was around 13 I found a swamp that was really a runoff for a chemical plant. The water was all kinds of different colors and there was even one of those giant drains (6 foot diameter) that dumped into it. My friend and I would go there every day to catch frogs, shoot our slingshots and be kids. Now that I look back, it was probably a really freaking bad idea.

I couldn't imagine bringing my son to a place like that. Let alone a mine?

And since the dude has 5 kids, its further proof that Darwinism is false.

haha, exactly. I spent many days at the same age as kids in the OP exploring our town's sewers. It was pretty awesome, really. Parents would have kicked my ass if they knew it at the time.

I remember exploring all kinds of stupid places as a kid. We always made it out ok, and looking back, I guess it was some kind of a right of passage to adulthood.

I can't imagine having my own parent(s) encouraging / bringing me to the said stupid places, though. Part of the challenge was always covering up exactly where you were for the past few hours, because you knew if the found out the truth, you were done for.
