You are 4 years old, riding in the backseat of your parents' van. You are lucky to be alive today. Both of your parents are passed out, while the van is moving. Not to mention the school bus dropping off some other parent's kids, that is miraculously not hit by the van.

Emergency Medical Service workers responded and administered Narcan, a drug used to reverse the effects of a heroin overdose, to the couple.

I used to live around EL and all I have to say is that if you don't like the place pack up your junk like the Beverly Hillbilly's and move. That poor child should be taken away and handed over to foster care immediately so he can get some stability in his life in a caring environment. I saw this story break on main stream media who wouldn't show the child's face and some drug addiction group is protesting how the police made the story public. Those two idiot parents should be shamed in public for endangering a child like this.

I understand the media not wanting to show the toddler's face. This picture was taken by the police. I'm not sure that they were right in showing his face, in the higher interest of the privacy of the child. Still, when I see the expression on the child's face in the backseat of the van, I find it haunting and powerful. That is the police's intent. The police officer who snapped the picture is deserving of a Pulitzer prize.

I'd just like to add that the regional employment in that area has been in decline since the 70's when the big steel mills started shutting down after their business was outsourced. Without any meaningful blue collar employment to fall back on people have struggled during the transition from manufacturing to service jobs. The domestic paper industry has been under attack for decades and now that China and South America are exporting to us it's only a matter of time before you start reading about more domestic mill closures. I still remember driving through the area around East Liverpool back in the early 80's seeing the ghosts of times past rusting away.

Here in Jax its no great secret that after the channels get dug deeper the Chinese freighters will be able to load to capacity when coming here and paper will be a primary product for them. Chile exports large amounts of food grade paper to the U.S. and are used by companies such as Kraft here who receives a steady stream of it. This displaces domestic producers and will end up costing even more manufacturing jobs. Then we can add unionism to the mix where union leaders cannot see the forest for the trees and continue to think like Cro-Magnon men instead of realizing that if they don't work with their employers that they'll run them out of business and end up on the street like the idiots at the Confectionary union did to Hostess.

Life sentences for heroin dealers if someone ODs on their stuff and dies.

MUCH better funding and access to clinics to get people the help they need. That could be paid for with the prison money saved on pot users.
