The kid's face is like "My freaking idiot parents did it again. Can you just drop me off at grandma's? "

I suppose the good thing here is that the parents were "responsible" enough to do it while not actively driving. Looks like they're in a Beer Store parking lot or something.

As much as I hate to say it but drug addicts shouldn't be allowed to reproduce to prevent tragedies such as this one.

As much as I feel this shouldn't need to be said, but it's probably likely that those parents weren't drug addicts their entire life. All it would take is an injury, an overzealous doctor prescribing stronger pain killers than necessary, the end of a prescription, one addicted parent, and another who listens to, "omg, you've got to try one of these" and bamm. 2 addicted parents. It doesn't necessarily require many years to go from a normal person to someone who overdosed. I knew a very promising student who went from awesome to opioid addict to overdose (didn't die) to jail in less than 3 years. One tragedy in life is all it took to get set on that path.

One reason given for this epidemic (Ohio drug statistics say that 3050 died on OD in Ohio in one year, WTF is going on there?) is in fact the problem of still shitty national health coverage in the US w/ doctors who, unlike in Europe, are often all-too-willing to prescribe opiates..rather than having an interest in curing the actual problem. Someone said that most heroin addicts indeed started out addicted to pain killers.

Related: How does fining and jailing the addicts (like in this case) help with this problem..how does fining and throwing them in jail benefit ANYONE here?

Related2: The guy got fined and jailed ALSO for "endangerment" and DUI....I ask whether it was really so "bad" that he tried to rush HIS DYING GF/WIFE who obviously ODed and "already turned blue"...into the hospital? What would you/anyone else do in his situations? Wife/GF was fricking DYING. While probably not be the "optimal" choice in this situation, I can understand what he did and why he did it and I bet that a good percentage of people would have done the same thing.

Several "oh so smart" people on the net argued that taking drugs "is a choice" - obviously, those people have not the slightest idea what "addiction" is.

If it is indeed the case that MANY got on this path because of irresponsible doctors (which the US is full of), then not even the start of their addiction path was a choice.

In Ohio alone, seems that currently 23 people die DAILY because of ODing, and they seems only to have one underfunded rehab facility (from what I read)...so how do they ever expect to solve this problem? By sending out "proud" cops who fine and jail every addict...like most of those people are not fucked up/punished enough? Being punished for being addicted to heroin? Yeah...that'll sure help things!

That guy behind the wheel was a serious accident waiting to happen, so the answer is yes it really is that bad.

Let's not forget the "lets take away their supply" legislation, because, "that will fix the problem." And, maybe down the road as fewer drugs in that class are subscribed, it will alleviate the problem to some extent. But, if you look back at conversations on these forums from just a few years ago, everyone seemed able to figure out that drying up the supply of drugs that had been manufactured under strict guidelines wasn't going to stop addicts from abusing drugs - they would just turn to heroin and other opioid drugs with God only knows what mixed in with them... and result in a sharp increase in O.D. deaths. It seems that legislators took the point of view of "well, fuck those people. They don't matter." There should have been much more comprehensive plans in place to help those people.
