Parents: So what's the consensus on crib bumpers for infants?

Our first is on the way May 30, and we're naturally excited. One of the things, however, that we've been getting conflicting information on are crib bumpers.

About half of our friends are saying that they are good because they help protect the baby's head from smacking up against the hard railings of the crib.

The other half say that you shouldn't use them because small infants don't have the reflexes to move themselves if they somehow end up with their face up against the bumper and could suffocate.

Reports like these seem to back that up:

Anyway, for the parents out there, did you use bumpers?

the monkey is awesome!

You will find that the less in the crib the better. No need to add more worries. You will have plenty of those with your first

Grats.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Go with standard guidelines on the fluffy stuff. You'll stress out plenty anyway.

The only thing that should be in a crib is the mattress and the baby. There should be no pillows or other soft objects, and their should be no blankets that are not tucked in, blankets should also never go above the infants chest area.

So bumpers are a big no no.

yes they could suffocate, but we took the risk. Had pillows and blankets (in addition to wrap arounds). Also had a drop-side crib before the major recall... both kids turned out fine. We had someone in the room when they slept. Still have the cribs, converted now to day-beds which don't have the drop-sides anymore.

OMG we are such rebels. It's like I grew up without a carseat or something.

We used bumpers.

I looked at it like this, if they can roll off their back, they have enough strength to roll away from suffocation.

We used bumpers for both our sons. Our youngest(he's 5 now)had a crib very similar to yours except it wasn't painted black it was stained brown.

I think either way you go it will be fine. There are pros for and against them so just pick one and go with it.

No blanket either.

you should use a baby-sack; it's like a potato sack, but it's for babies.

I've had 3 in the past 4 years so if you want to ask anything don't hesitate to PM

Yes, we used bumpers and our son is still alive.

This is the line of advice/perspective you will get from a lot of people that don't follow today's best-practices for health safety and welfare.

Clearly the ignorance of a sample-size of one ignores the out-liar issues involved in SIDS.

Let it eat wood.

No, seriously. If your baby wants to eat the banisters, let it. It will otherwise bonk off the crib without harm but an appreciation for the strength and durability of wood. Yeah, wood. That's shit's for real.

No bumpers, my wife was adamant about that. Kids are constantly hitting their heads on things so I wouldn't be too concerned about the possibility of bumping their head into the sides of the crib.
