If the family is "forced" to home school their daughter, then should they have to pay taxes that go towards paying for school she can't attend?

Yes just like all of us that have no children pay taxes towards schools that provide no direct benefit to us.

This is what is wrong with society. In a better world, the peanut kid's parents would want to homeschool their kid at this point, and everyone else should want to band together to go through this stuff to include the peanut kid.

My son has a very strong allergy to peanuts, but we never even considered asking the school to have other kids change their eating habits or hygeine routine. We simply trained him not to eat any food he didn't bring himself, and how to use an epipen if it became necessary.

We also provided the school with extra epipens and made sure the teacher was aware of the potential problem, but we did not ask for any special treatment.

He attended public school through grade 12 and is now enrolled in university and hasn't had a problem.

Canada != US

Imagine if the teacher incorrectly used the epipen. Lawsuit!

Other home schooling parents have to pay taxes, people without children have to pay taxes... so why shouldn't she? I was home schooled because the public school system sucked, but my parents still had to pay taxes.

Thanks. Seems like there is very sound evidence and science why hypercleanliness and antibiotic everything is causing such a rise in allergies in kids. So the kid's allergies are likely a result of the parents and grandparents for being too clean.

That and now forcing this extra cleanliness on other children might make them suffer later in life with additional allergies. There are even correlations in many studies between hyper hygiene and autism.

So not only is this girls "right" to be in school infringing upon the right of other kids to not have PB&J's for example, she is infringing upon their right to develop a healthy auto immune system as well.

Sorry folks, one person's health problems is not greater than the increased risk factor for all kids in the school.

She should be taken out of school and home schooled. Or, sent to school in a body bubble as another person noted earlier. Or at least wearing a gas mask. No matter what, she is going to suffer social interaction in life regardless of what is done. So why make everyone suffer for just one kid?

Choice. Nothing stopping the parents from sending their kids to public school or the childless to have children.

I am sure it is likely that this child's life would be at risk if a peanut were ingested. I am unconvinced that exposure to skin or breath would cause a potentially fatal reaction. To be sure, it could cause a rash or hives, but I think a line has to be drawn somewhere. This would have to be the most allergic person on the planet to have life-threatening reactions across all forms of exposure, since airborne and touch are usually nowhere near as bad as direct ingestion.

Darwin is knocking on her door, and he's packin' a PBJ.

Spock was right in this case. Peanut-sniffing dogs and an extra 30 minutes a day to clean is going beyond a reasonable accommodation.

Poor kid - not only does she have a severe allergy, everyone hates her now. She didn't do anything wrong.

Did you not read the link I posted? Peanut allergies are unlike any other allergy. Period. Those with hyper-sensitivity to peanuts can die from anaphylactic shock within minutes of ANY FORM OF EXPOSURE. It only affects a very small segment of any given population though.

I agree its not her fault. but then why should it be EVERY other student in the school's responsibility to make sure they don't expose her? why should they sacrifice 2.5 hours a week doing stuff for her?

i understand why the students and parents are mad at the kid. they shouldn't be but i understand why.

I absolutely agree with your first part. But your second part...eh not so much. Turning people into germophobes is defeating a healthy persons immune response. We get stronger through exposure, not avoiding it. Basic hygiene is certainly required (washing hands after bathroom use and covering mouths while sneezing, ect). But washing hands and rinsing your mouth before entering a room every time? Come on.

I agree with this agreement.

It's a pretty shitty situation. There's definite value in being able to attend school and live as "normal" a life as possible, but having to accommodate her allergy is such an imposition and distraction for all the other students that it really isn't fair.

Which article? The one in the OP where medical experts dispute the severity, or the wikipedia link you posted where it is directly stated that many medical experts dispute the severity of airborne or external exposure? I can't really find any article that supports the notion that someone is likely to die from anaphylaxis within minutes of any form of exposure as you contend.
