So I was out late last night and parked at a meter. It turned out to be a blue meter (I didn't even know they had handicapped meters), thus handicapped. Should I appeal? I didn't pick up my car untill later today.

Why would you appeal? You did it, right? People who park in disabled spaces should die TBH.

Unless you can prove that someone moved your car there after you parked legally, you need to man up.

For $301 it's worth a shot. Tell the magistrate just what you told us, it was dark and you didn't see the color of the meter in the yellow glow of the streetlights that make blue look gray. Worst you'll get is $301 and a wasted hour or two.

I have no sympathy for people who park in handicap parking, especially after seeing some thugs pull into a spot while a little old lady who could barely walk had to park much further away. OP's handle serves him well.

Yeah, not seeing that it's a blue meter does not mean you can get out of the ticket. You really don't have any grounds for an appeal.

Plead not guilty and explain your story. Take a picture of the meter at night with no flash and a regular one. If your lucky the judge might get rid of the ticket or at least reduce the fine.

Puts my $9 parking ticket (first ever) a few weeks ago to shame. Ya, it turns out municipalities don't go easy on government vehicles that are 1 hour over their meter time.

im all for crucifying people who park in a handicapped space illegally, but there are some things to consider...

for example if it was as late as OP says, and its 1am and someone parks in handicapp spot in an empty parking lot...etc then i think we can let this pass.

Yes I feel bad for parking in handicapped spot. I never did it before. It was around 12 when I parked and I didn't even look at the meter because I didn't need to put money in the meter that late. When I went back to pick up my car it was the only one on the road. The thing is though, I didn't pick up the car the same night because I was drunk... That may not be fun trying to explain.

At 1 AM there must have been plenty of open slots for him

His headlights do not work?

Never seen a handicapped spot with meter. Around here they can just park anywhere, even where you cannot legally park... Though I have yet to see one park in front of a hydrant

Was it marked as handicap on the parking lot? I would honestly never even figure a blue meter means handicap parking. It makes sense now that I know, but I would not have known at the time. They should use standard markings which is the wheelchair sign. If there was no markings, I'd give it a try and argue that point. Probably wont work, but worth a shot if you have a friend who's a lawyer and wont charge you, otherwise don't bother and just pay it.

Absolutely fight it. While I'm not one to park in handicap spots, they often don't mark them properly, and if they're not properly marked they technically are not a legal handicapped spot and you can't be ticketed for parking there.

I also get annoyed when you goto Target or something and there are like 50 handicapped spots out in front. Seriously? Have 50 handicapped people EVER shown up here all the same time? it seems a bit ridiculous.

LOL yes, I find that pretty bad. My dad was actually complaining once because at one of the arenas here there are like 8 spots. Seriously, are there really going to be 8 handicapped people going to an old timer hockey game at the same time? LOL

You know, handicapped people want to be treated just like everyone else. I think they should get tickets for parking in non-handicapped spots to make things fair.

Were there any markings on the meter or the parking spot to indicate it was a handicapped spot other than the blue meter? Handicapped spots on streets aren't very common, I wouldn't have known that a blue meter meant it was for handicapped people. A handicapped spot should be marked with a sign and a symbol on the ground.
