hmm it was blue?yeah usually handicaped parking is painted blue. so good luck.

In ILL one of the benifits of having a handicap parking sticker is you don't pay for meter parking. wich leads to some in chicago getting them to avoid paying.

I also get annoyed when you goto Target or something and there are like 50 handicapped spots out in front. Seriously? Have 50 handicapped people EVER shown up here all the same time? it seems a bit ridiculous.

Well, my sister is in a wheelchair and when I was growing up, we had a specially modified van that had a lift that lowered. So, not only did she need a handicapped spot, she also needed a spot that had an open area on the passenger side. While most of the time there are a sufficient number of spots, quite frequently there would not be handicapped spot available. If there wasn't we'd have to take two spots farther away. It happened all the time at Costco.

usually i'd flame a post like this but i've never heard of a handicapped meter... plus it's late at night, you don't really consider if a meter is for handicaps or not, since you never knew it existed

From the Kahleeforneeya DMV:

" Parking privileges for DP placard, DP plates, or DV plates

?In parking spaces with the International Symbol of Access (wheelchair symbol).
?Next to a blue curb authorized for handicap parking.
?Next to a green curb (green curbs indicate limited time parking) for as long as you wish. There is no time limit with a DP placard, DP license plates, or DV license plates.
?In an on-street metered parking space at no charge.
?Streets where preferential parking privileges are given to residents and merchants (private off street merchant parking facilities may be restricted to customers and employees).
In addition to parking privileges, service stations must refuel a disabled person?s vehicle at self-service rates unless the service facility has only one employee on duty.

Are there any limitations of parking privileges?
Yes, you cannot park:

?In spaces marked with a crosshatched pattern next to a parking space with the International Symbol of Access (wheelchair symbol). These spaces are for wheelchair and wheelchair lift access.
?Next to red curbs, which indicate no stopping, standing, or parking.
?Next to yellow curbs, which are for commercial vehicles to load and unload passengers or freight.
?Next to white curbs, which are for loading and unloading passengers or depositing mail in an adjacent mailbox."

Here, the fine STARTS at $250 for the first offense, $500 for the second offense, and $750 for the 3rd and subsequent offenses. PLUS, the county is permitted to tack on an additional $100 fine as well. Then, add all the other fees and court costs and that "quick stop for the ATM" could easily cost you $1000 if you've been caught before.

I'm the kind of prick who will drop a dime on you for parking in a handicapped spot MOST of the time. If the OP had accidentally parked in a handicapped spot overnight and there was lots of other parking, then retrieved his car before parking got crowded the next morning...then let it slide, but by his own admission:

The thing is though, I didn't pick up the car the same night because I was drunk... That may not be fun trying to explain.

says he deserves the ticket he got...and his car SHOULD have been towed on top of the ticket.
(watches for the OP on "Parking Wars."

Saterday morning = no crowd. Not trying to say what I did was right but I think it's better that I took a cab instead of attempting to drive.

Do you want a medal? Should we be congratulating you for parking in a disabled space rather than driving drunk?

Ugh. Anyone faulting him for not knowing that a blue meter is for handicapped parking is an idiot themselves. I didn't know. Heck, most people don't even live remotely near a parking meter and rarely see or use them (I had maybe used one once in my life before moving to SD). Why not just put up the international symbol with it?! You've got a freakin' POLE right there to put it on!

If in CA, as BoomerD states, a disabled person can park as long as they wish and can park at an on-street meter at no charge, then why would a blue meter even exist? You can't expect someone from another state to know that just like I didn't know the rules about chocking wheels and parking motorcycles in CA (rear tire must touch the curb).

Our handicapped spots are not metered...I'm not sure I've ever seen a blue meter before.

They're special meters that only accept Roosevelt dimes.

I have no sympathy for people who park in handicap parking, especially after seeing some thugs pull into a spot while a little old lady who could barely walk had to park much further away. OP's handle serves him well.

Well obviously he didn't do it on purpose.

Yes I feel bad for parking in handicapped spot. I never did it before. It was around 12 when I parked and I didn't even look at the meter because I didn't need to put money in the meter that late. When I went back to pick up my car it was the only one on the road. The thing is though, I didn't pick up the car the same night because I was drunk... That may not be fun trying to explain.

Oh, so you were actually there in the morning too? That's probably when you got ticketed. When did you pick up your car? You could probably get away with parking in a handicapped spot if you were to park between, say, 12 and 4, but after that you're probably going to get a ticket.

They have handicapped meters around here too, and I'm not sure but I think most of the time they have a sign as well. At least the meters themselves are marked.

$301 fine? Blue meter? You're in Philly, aren't you? Whereabouts did you park?

Also, you could fight it I suppose... but really, it was your fault. Ignorance isn't going to get you out of the ticket methinks.

They're rare, but I'm pretty sure i've seen them in Boston.

OP, the best you can hope for is to get a sympathetic judge and explain your situation. Don't be a jerk about it and hope that the guy sees you just made a mistake.

Don't even get my started on the PPA's design decisions. A current project I'm working on involves redesigning a bunch of signage and whatnot for them, and let me tell you, it's an effing NIGHTMARE.

Right outside of Penn. Yeah, I've heard that ignorance pleas don't really work. I can only hope for a sympathetic judge. $301 is a lot of money for me right now.

I see way to many people with handicap tags. It feels like maybe there isn't a lot of oversight about who gets them.

Aren't your disabled parking spots clearly marked?

Example

It is also weird because here disabled street parking is free...

I got a similar ticket at 2nd and Market at 2am on a weekend night a few years ago, didn't realize it was a handicapped spot...didn't even realized I had a ticket until the next morning because there was so many club flyers on the windshield when I got back to the car I just threw them on the seat. I had to appeal it 2 or 3 times and then write a letter to the PPA which was still denied, finally got a hearing..went in and sat down with some chick who hadn't even read the letter, explained the situation and said I wasn't refuting that I parked in the spot but it was an honest mistake. She dismissed the charges. Bottom line, fight the ticket and expect to be rejected a few times, keep fighting it and keep fighting it.

Oh and ATOT is the wrong place to ask for advice for things like this because it's a bunch of people who claim they have never gone 1mph over the speed limit. Don't listen to all the self-righteous assholes.

I'd fight it. Never heard of a fucking blue meter. And if it's night time when you don't even have to feed meters, who'd even think to inspect the damn thing anyway?

And it is nice to hear that you left your car there instead of driving drunk.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. I beleive blue parking spaces's are handicaped all over the US. While i have never seen a blue parking meter (In ILL handicaped plates/placard lets you park for free) it should be in the rules of the road book he got.

LOL, I originally read that as you thinking a lot of overweight people get them, and I was like "true, true."

sadly you are both right. being "obese" is a reason to get one. you just have to be able to claim you can't walk 200 ft without a rest.

Also in chicago a few aldermen got in trouble for having them and giving them out. Since meters in chicago shot up after they sold the rights to them..
