Partitioning SSD for 2 OS to use- what is trimmed?

XP Pro system with some HDDs. Add in an SSD to put Win 7 64 on, and attempt to make a dual boot PC.

However I want to give XP one of the SSD partitions. Not a problem. But what happens when win 7 trims? Its going to see the XP partition and clear up all its redundant data too? Or no?

And can anyone think of any other potential problems sharing an SSD among 2 OS?

The TRIM command will only reset the NAND cells on the drive that have been deleted to a free state thus, if you delete a temporary file then trim will tell the drive controller to trim the cell(s) that contain that file and the controller will reset the cell to free space. This is why TRIM is not the magic bullet to avoid performance degradation on an SSD. It will help but does not cure or solve the problem.

yeah but what will happen to the data on the xp partition, xp doesnt support trim, but win 7 does, and will see the xp partition.

looks like ive stumped everyone lol

The answer is probably that any data that xp writes on either partition will only be trimmed when i run a trimming tool manually, while anything win 7 does on either partition will be done on the fly..but i really dont know, and dont know if mixing trim states or management on a drive like that is acceptable or may lead to additional performance degradation or not.

Anyone?

Yeah that's how it works. The TRIM commands is sent to the drive when the OS deletes a file, TRIM won't do anything to existing data, so you've got to use the whiper tool for the partition (can you even specify a partition with the tool? No idea, but it's not as if it would harm to run the wiper tool over the win7 partition..)

This is my guess as well.
